For all we know anyone else down there is just as in the dark as we are and it's just some spooky mural from people who have been down there a long time or heard stories or maybe even had a few strange encounters for the big accident. The movie is so light on hard details, which kinda works in it's favor at keeping the tension high without any huge exposition dump. I'd be interested to know if a director's commentary exists for the movie.
