Zestligula
I saw the new cut of Caligula in 2024 at the IFC center in manhattan. Had never seen it before. Then afterwards watched the original theatrical cut on my own. It's interesting how the recut makes such extensive use of what seem to be master shots to really show off the incredible sets they built. It's absolutely crazy to me how much the theatrical version cuts around them. Didn't they want you to see all the millions they spent on this thing? I guess the producer figured nobody who was seeing this movie cared about that. But mostly I walked away thinking trying to recut Caligula to find the masterpiece hidden within it is a fool's errand. It just isn't a good movie. It's really remarkable how much they blew it, there's no meaningful narrative arc. Caligula is already an insane fool at the start of the film. Even the ancient Roman historians who wrote about him tried to build a rise and fall narrative into his short reign where he starts off doing well, then gets corrupted. But if that was intended to be in the movie, it's not at all readable. I will say that the wedding scene where Caligula brutally rapes both the bride and groom is really stomach turning. That was well done. Here's the ultimate indictment though. At the screening I went to there was some grubby looking obese boomer who showed up 10 minutes after the movie started, and went all the way into the front row. When there was the first on screen sex act he bellowed out YEAAAAAAH. 30 minutes before the end of the film he was loudly snoring. If they couldn't keep him entertained, what hope is there for the rest of us?I will say this though, Helen Mirren's ass was fat. I liked that.
>>219525523I always liked the setting besides the cooming aspects, gonna see if I can find that cut later
>>219525752You should check this movie out if you like the ancient roman setting, the whole thing is on youtubehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecMfU3910WY
>>219525869That looks gorgeous
>>219525869Gladiator for adults
I was at the Ultimate Cut screening with Malcom present, had to leave midway through
I watched this for the first time last year and I genuinely don't get why it got shat on so hard back in the day? I loved it, it was unhinged, but gorgeous with some great scenes and acting. And it really wasn't as degenerate as some other shit Italians or the French were doing back in the day that was beloved by the artsy crowd..That being said, I watched that newest, "fully restored" or whatever it was called version, so maybe it was way worse on release, who knows
>>219526280>That being said, I watched that newest, "fully restored" or whatever it was called version, so maybe it was way worse on release, who knowsThey cut out the most egregious part of the original theatrical version, which was that it had straight up porno scenes, not involving any of the movie's characters, just inserted in. And I don't mean like a movie sex scene, an actual XXX porno scene. So you'd have the story going, then randomly a 5-10 minute porn scene where the movie just stops while two random people have hardcore sex. And this happens several times throughout the movie.
>>219526738Kek, okay, that kinda explains it
>>219526738>They cut out the most egregious part of the original theatrical versionsomeone needs to make a Ultimate Ultimate recut with everything inBECAUSE WTF IS THE POINT IF THEY REMOVE THE PORNO SCENES
>>219525523i enjoyed this. didn't know about recut. to me, the narrative is ok until the ending - a battle scene that never happens.
>>219527893thank you. /thread. And there is no pointless sex scene in this - it all connects to the central characters.
>>219527893the hardcore porn scenes were forced into the movie to begin with
