But a dream ending used seriously 9/10 times just diminishes the setting, unless dreams are presented as something “real”. Yes, all fiction is “false” (unless you ask some folks on /x/, but I digress) but the relative grounding of stories is what makes them compelling. They have to work within their own set of rules. There is media that works with dreams as a mechanic and work just fine. Inception, Lost, and yes, Twin Peaks. But if you think you’re clever for saying “dream stuff is a copout is actually extremely ignorant” you’re just needlessly defending 1) yes, lazy writing 2) uncreating and unintelligent uses of dreams as a mechanic, setting, or esoteric concept within fictional workstl;dr there’s nothing wrong with dreams but yes using “it was all a dream” is a disappointing storytelling path
