Overall I really liked it. It felt like the characters after a long time had passed, the humor felt the same even in a different era and overall four part structure. New Dewey was inoffensive, he's not in it that much. Jamie also didn't get a lot of material, just some glimpses of what kind of chaos he had to him. Kelly got a lot of attention, mostly with Reese, and the flashback to the old family dinner makes it clear that they had a girl.

Yeah, cute enough. Her subplot mostly revolves around Reese, she's the closest one to having a "normal" upbringing, though she still has some punk rebellious spirit. She and Leah become friends with the test tube Krelboyne guy at the end, though it feels a bit abrupt.

Overall there's a lot of webm material, but I don't know how much I would say for Kelly.

Leah is basically girl Malcolm who grew up with a devoted and loving father and no mother or siblings. She inherited his genius but also his neuroticism, and she's much more sensitive because she didn't grow a thick skin growing up in a family like his. Malcolm runs a big charity organization where he monitors leftover food using a system and donates it all to food banks, and he's thinking of moving into politics. He's actually a really good single dad, but he stays away from his family because they bring out all of his worst traits, his desire to prove himself, his neuroticism, his anger and meltdowns. Leah is the result of his first kegger in college, and her birth mother left 3 days after she was born.

Malcolm feels like he should be a screw up and is neurotic as ever but is legitimately in a great place and has improved as a human being. He's still performative but he is is helping the poor in a real way, and the stuff with how much he cares for his daughter is sweet. He admits that the restaurant they always went to when she was little was shit (backed up with real examples like finding a Band-Aid in his burger, cockroaches, being filthy, etc.) but that he loved going because of the time they spent together talking and playing the arcade games. I went in expecting that Malcolm would be on the verge of corruption or on the wrong path, but no, the only thing people could object to with him was trying to keep his two families separate.

Dewey feels like a different guy, and maybe it is just Erik Per Sullivan not returning and them choosing to keep his character relatively disconnected. It's a shame because he was one of the starring roles in the original.
Jamie never had much of a character and of course it's going to be a new actor (he already had a few as a baby/toddler). It's hard to do much with him without giving too much screen time.
Kelly only existed as the idea of a sixth kid at the very end of the series, so she's a new character. The non-binary thing is unfortunate because she gets a relatively large amount of screen time relative to Jamie, Dewey, and even Reese so it makes you feel like it's some sort of Disney diversity mandate, but I feel like the non-binary thing is supposed to just be a joke about not committing to saying whether the sixth kid was a boy or girl (definitely a girl in that one flashback when she was little), and the screen time is because this is supposed to be a backdoor pilot for a series about Leah and they clumsily try to group Kelly with her at the end as part of her new friend group.

Hal used to be an extravegant character that needed to reined in by Louis but is now a fragile character that has no personality except crying. Hal is the same. He's always been fearful and neurotic (watch the episode where he realizes the family hasn't had health insurance for 6 months), and he's always been the kind of guy who takes up totally random hobbies and becomes a savant. My issue is that he feels like he gets too much focus and praise here because it's Bryan Cranston. He's the executive producer for this, and the party isn't just a celebration of Lois and Hal's 40th anniversary, it's also a dedication to Hal. The scene where he's tripping goes on a bit too long for what would be Malcolm in the Middle, it's an entire episode at least and it's not important enough to the story as a whole to get that much time. Fans love Hal, but the time could have been spread a bit more evenly for other characters. Though I am glad Lois gets the emotional scene with Malcolm at the end.

Reese dropped the bully thing as he grew up, it wasn't something that they used that much outside the early seasons. He has always been a dumb, destructive menace who lacks empathy. He has things he's good at, but out of all the kids, he was the least likely one to live a normal, successful life even if he could cook like a professional. I wanted a bit more stuff with him interacting with the other siblings here, but he spends a lot of it hiding.

I want Kelly to be able to one-up her brothers in some ways, why even be related to them if she doesn't have that potential? She's kind of a shit person with the teen angst towards her parents and ditching Leah on the Zoom call.

Leah is straight up girl Malcolm minus the misanthropy and superiority complex. Instead she spergs out at social interactions and doesn't have any siblings to fall back with like Malcolm did and is more fragile than she is biting. Malcolm is a great dad, but she would have benefited from having more family members to even her out a bit.

Francis has been with the same company for 15 years (so not the one from the last episode which was 19 years ago) and is upper management and he has 75 people working under him. Lois refuses to call it a stable job as long as there are people who want to steal his position from him.
Malcolm operates his own non-profit charity and his daughter attends a private school
Jamie is part of the US Coast Guard
Kelly is still in high school
Reese is a deadbeat who makes exploitative online videos of Hal embarrassing himself under the guise of father-son bonding through weekend renovations that Hal pays for, and he makes money off of ad revenue and merchandise until Kelly and Hal discover it.
