Why did it bomb at the box office?
>>
>>219582331
It sucked
>>
>>219582331
The internet fanbase wasn't as huge as the movie directors thought it would be.

People didn't watch "it's so bad, its good" movies unironically back then.

The supposed "fans" didnt come out in full force to watch the movie.
>>
>>219582331
Michael cera was too ugly for the role.
>>
>>219582331
Michael Cera as the lead. I actually like this movie even how reddit it is but no way can Cera carry a box office success.
>>
>>219583846
Michael was perfect for the role. He has the cute, nerdy attractiveness and the beta male personality.
>>
It is a movie for virginal 13-17 year olds. Who already had American Pie to introduce them to dating. It is not a movie that you watch with your parents or friends.
>>
>>219582331
Real answer?

The story was weak.

It had really nice special effects but thats just superficial. Scott Pilgrim would have made a great steaming movie.

But not a lot of people....are going to deal with the hassle of going to the theater just to see Scott Pilgrim.

Also the movie relied too much on memes and internet culture.
>>
BPD AND EXTASY
>>
>>219583987
That's the problem. Scott is a Chad that goes beta for Romana. Cera started beta and threw off the whole arc
>>
>>219584217
>>219583536
what are you taking about, what does it have to do with internet and memes? it was based on a comic book about dating as a teenager
>>
>>219582331
The truth is twofold:
>the comic had gained a fanbase that was chronically online but not particularly "blockbuster numbers" large for a Hollywood movie
It seemed larger than it was because they were a vocal minority, but it was before boomers realized that something being amplified online =/= irl bigbux.
And
>wasn't marketed well at all, despite having the backing of Universal
Like the TV spots didn't really tell you what it was about, the title and poster make it seem like a lame coming of age story, the actual trailers made it look either like a romcom or like a superhero movie. And the ads were limited mostly to the internet, where the core fanbase was, but everyone online at the time already had an opinion on the series and their willingness to see the movie was already set. Plus zero bankable names in the cast. No, nobody ever went and saw movie because of Michael Cera.
The actual movie isn't appealing to anyone unfamiliar with the comic, and also somehow alienated a lot of comic fans because it was too different.
If it had been an indie film with a smaller budget, it would have been considered a success. If it had actually been good, it might have been a cult classic.
Instead it's a meme movie people born after 1999 think was huge because they saw a Tiktok about Ramona.
>>
>>219582331
Its a movie for horny teenaged boys where the love interest is a turbo skank. Limited only to young bucks structurally.
>>
>>219582331
not enough gay people cared
>>
>>219584350
knowing this verifies you are a 500lbs goblinformed homosexual.
>>
>>219582331
I never even heard of this shit until years later when people were calling it a classic. Shit slipped completely through the crackers
>>
>>219584161
It's basically Twilight for boys
>>
>>219582331
Expendables raped the shit out of this little basedboy flick
>>
>>219582331
Chronically online people rarely go out to the movies with their friends. They cling onto media everyone ignored and talk about it online because offline normies at work, school and home are talking about The Expendables, Eat Pray Love and Step Up at the time.
It's like how The Big Bang Theory was the top sitcom when Community was on, but every online forum was crowded with Community fans, meanwhile watercoolers were more concerned with Sheldon.

That's insulting to women. The women who read Twilight mostly were able to figure out that the narrative was fictional and were able to find a romantic partner.
Men who liked Scott Pilgrim are still standing like a loyal dog, waiting for a cute Asian and a Dyed Haired Punk Rock Edgelord Girl to fight over their cock.

when is sequel

>That's insulting to women
tits or GFTO
>The women who read Twilight mostly were able to figure
no, they got pumped and dumped by guys imitating Robert Pattison on Tinder. some of them settled for a beta provider afterwards, others ended up single (mothers).
>waiting for a cute Asian
my wife is asian and so are the wives of 2 of my best friends. seethe and cope, roastie
>>

>settled for a beta provider afterwards
bit a tell on yourself there, eh?
>my wife is asian and so are the wives of 2 of my best friends
Another tell on yourself.
Having a small dick must be miserable. You can completely rig your life to be a Norman Rockwell print, and yet still be underneath unhappy
Just proof, that the only true happiness for men is hitting the cervix.

DUDE IT'S JUST LIKE YOUR FAVORITE VIDYA AND ANIME

The Multiplex it's Opening Weekend
>Step Up 3D
>The Other Guys
Week two of a mid-level action comedy and what was a major cult Dance Movie. Both took precious 16-29 Asses
>Expendables
Mega-Blockbuster huge with that key young male and ironic nerd demographics. All the biggest 80s-00s action stars coming together in a ham-fest.
>Eat Pray Love
Sure that was a date movie/movie for the 30-64 Women demographic mostly, but most theaters at the time had about 8 screens and when you got into smaller communities they often had less.
All that competition had an effect. People aren't gonna see every movie and theaters are gonna choose the films that are the most obvious wins to have more screens. It's basic math.

Anon, look at the poster.
Even they knew he was a fuck awful choice for the lead.
He was a terrible choice for the lead and sunk the entire production.

What a goddamn faggot

I'm one of the few people who enjoyed watching Scott Pilgrim home. But if I had wanted to see it at the cinema, I can't think of anyone I could take with me. My friends would sneer at it, my parents would be baffled by it, and if I had a gf at the time, I would not take her to see something as dorky as this.
>>
>>219589487
When I was 13 I had a group of friends who were into pokemon, yu-gi-oh, spongebob and stuff. I remember one of them coming to school one day and saying "hey, guys, do you know what I have found out? when they talk about fucking in the ass, they don't mean fuck a woman in the ass, they mean into the vagina but from behind".

Yeah, those guys would have been the ones to watch Scott Pilgrim with.
>>
People HATED Cera at this point for some reason, advertising specifically for his films started hiding his face and stuff.

A hyper exaggerated comic book with funny special effects and powers.
>>
>>219598089
It definitely is in a meta sense. Like they casted Cera knowing the concept would come off as comical
>>
>>219599028
Bullshit.
They cast that fairy because he had jew Hollywood clout and some producer thought they could sell it to that nonexistent Superbad audience.

Casting Michael Cera was a huge mistake.
Scott is supposed to be a badass.
>>
>>219598215

people went to see movies every week back then
>>
>>219599192
no, he's supposed to be a retard in the main comic book timeline
he used to be a chad but then he had a brain injury or something and became retarded
i dont know, i read the comics when i was 16
>>
>>219584350
He doesn’t go beta, he cheats on his 17 year old catholic girlfriend with a random amazon delivery slut for a few weeks.
But yeah, I wouldn’t say he exactly fits the Chad archetype, but he definitely got in a ton of fights and kicked high schoolers’ asses while landing Envy.

I liked it

Not even a Rickenbacker 4001 (the bass) could make him look cool in this film, and it is the coolest bass ever made.

>Why did it bomb at the box office?
Because the story wasn't appealing enough for general audiences. Random people are interested in Top Gun and are willing to drive to the movie theater to see it. They aren't interested in seeing Scott Pilgrim chase a girl for 2 hours.

The movie studio also vastly overestimated how big the Scott Pilgrim fan base was.
