They couldn't have children on their own (becuase creating life from a dead womb causes super death), so they kidnapped them to raise them. People like Rousseau didn't even know they were dead, just like the Losties. But the plot was so predictable they changed everything in further seasons to civilized people experiencig fertility problems.
