It adds more depth to character. Peter Benton was a complete asshole, but made John Carter a great surgeon and doctor. Everyone hates Kerry Weaver, but she's simply enforcing rules and trying to keep the hospital from going under. Robert Romano was the only jerk who had no redeeming qualities.
