Like any media about the American mafia, there are lots of people who watch it because they identify with the big dumb Italians who get loads of money and pussy by being criminals, so figure a huge segment of the fanbase is just dumb assholes. There are lots of people who like it because Gandolfini does such a great performance as Tony and the show acts as a larger metaphor for the decline of America as viewed through the decline of the mafia
