I used to wonder if this would hold up, given the advancements in animation technology and widespread availability of anime on demand. I figured it would be mogged by something newer and shinier by now. But actually, I think so much anime has suffered greatly from an overreliance of tropes and otaku audience expectations that this movie still stands out. Because it's not an anime being anime. It is an animated scifi film from Japan.
