This is the thing I wish the movie touched more. It does a little, but the reality is a lot of people loved the idea of lying about being Zodiac. It's a constant thing with pathetic losers who have accomplished nothing to just lie. DB Cooper stuff is plagued with this.

Witness testimony is notoriously unreliable, though having said that Michael Mageau really did identify Arthur Leigh Allen as the Zodiac, however even with that there were conflicting identifiers between his description and Allen, not to mention it was over 20 years later.
The strongest indicator that the Zodiac was not ALA is that the DNA profile developed from the envelopes did not match, his fingerprints and palm prints did not match those in the cab, and even with the whole ambidextrous thing ALA's handwriting was never matched by any expert to the Zodiac's.
Really the DNA not matching is all you need. That's basically a slam dunk in ruling him out.

The problem is that there is no evidence that the DNA or the fingeprints are Zodiac's. And they are obvioulsy not very reliable (meaning have not been stored well enough) since they couldn't even build a DNA tree to match him on some public genealogy site like they did with the Original Night Stalker.

There's mountain of circumstantial evidence against ALA and way too many "coincidences". The fact that the Zodiac never communicated while ALA was indisposed is a huge red flag in of itself.

I personally believe in the multiple killers theory.
I believe that the original killer started this and realized very quickly how autistic and gay all of this was and another killer started LARPing the fame. Maybe realizing that it's easier to control the situation and confuse the police?
All of the suspects have absurdly coincidental situations.
Father has a saying "one coincidence is a coincidence, two coincidences is not a fucking coincidence."
So Arthur seems likely at first, until you look that 3 other guys have just as much random weird multiple coincidences that it's just legitimately confusing.

Almost like a coincidence in itself, very coincidental that we have like 4 very likely suspects all in their own rights.
So it's not a coincidence.
It's likely 2 of those suspects are both The Zodiac at different times.

99% of the movie is about the investigation, but there are some scenes recreating the zodiacs attacks, yes. I wouldn't say that it's super "gory" though, it's all pretty grounded. It's not like "Seven" or "The House That Jack Built" or anything remotely like that.
