Thats idiotic, a lot of silent movies are more advanced, fast paced, and emotional than movies made today. Metropolis is basically a modern blockbuster in every way except there is only music. Everything is so standardized now that often times silent movies feel more modern than modern movies since they are experimenting way more in the way things are shot and edited.

I think you're more likely to get into them if you're "broken in" to them. I took a film module at uni, and was forced to watch the silent classics. Once adjusted to the style, I begin to find silent films I enjoyed. But I still think Metropolis and Joan are crap, and I'll never change my mind about them.

Admittedly, I haven't seen it in a long time. I forget much, and can't get into the specifics with you. But my enduring impression of the film is that it was crudely cobbled together and sometimes didn't make sense.

I took film history in college we watched some D.W. Griffith and those movies bored me to tears. Also tried to watch several silent horrors and even though I'm a horrorfag I couldn't get into them. I think I've tried about 25-30 silent films and that's enough to realize that they just aren't for me. I did kinda like the Chaplin and Buster Keaton stuff, and Underworld 1927 was a neat early gangster flick, but I don't think I would ever watch them again.

One thing I had to realize is that silent film is fundamentally a different art form than sound pictures. You cannot apply all of the same judgement criteria you do to silents that you might for talkies.

Greek silent film version of romance Daphnis and Chloe from 1931. Thematically a proto-Fascist film it is a romance about two good natured rural sheep herders who fall in love but get lost in the city of Mitylene where homosexuals and prostitutes try to go to bed with them and tear them apart. This is a heavily Fascist leaning film from the 30s era before Greece/ Europe fell to Liberal ideology.
