WW2 was the beginning of the end
It was a gradual downfall so things had plateaued till the end of the century then sometime after the internet came into dominance the rapid decline began and I'm not sure if we have even reached the bottom yet

I am genuinely surprised that there isn't some cheap filter that can be used to create a 90% accurate recreation of technicolor.

The actual process was time expensive and required analog filmmaking which I am almost certain does not happen in any appreciable amount any more. It is not surprising that studios do not do Technicolor in the same way it is not surprising that books are no longer bound by hand.
>>
>>219631930
You "people" make the silly claim movies are bad now, but are completely unable to give substance to that claim. You just treat is as established fact and try to get away with it that way, when it's only established in your own heads and not even deeply.

>>219632005
Technicolor looks ridiculous in most cases. There's a reason that post is about a gay fucking musical. Aesthetically it's way too anachronistic now.

I'm not saying it's perfect but they did what they could with what they had technologically, and it was to their benefit to utilize a quirk of the tech.
>>
>>219635539
im probably older than you, just not autistic. go ahead and post a side by side comparison. your "hard edges" are fake and doubly so when you see it in motion. in real life you can tell the difference between a thing and the background behind it. you know what is and isnt the thing. "this filter is better because its blurry and smudgy" is a laughably pathetic cope. even when everything is blurred (both character and background) you can still clearly tell what is and isnt the character. being blurry and obscured in any capacity is not a plus. you're a sniveling autist putting old technology on a pedestal for the mere "merit" of being old.

You're definitely not, and next you'll tell me my 20/10 eyesight sucked and was the reason I liked it when in reality I could make out every bit of the vibrant fuzzies. I'd never say it's better than modern graphics but it's disingenuous to think flat sprites with 3-4 colors look as good as they did when run through crt screens. the technology isn’t lost, light is cast through a specially made prism that separates out the yellow hue of of a high pressure sodium bulb onto two separate pieces of film. They’re combined or left apart depending on the desired effect.

We use digital mediums now because they’re more productive and cost effective with less restrictions around how a set can be configured.

>WW2 was the beginning of the end
No. We've been in this downward spiral for as long as we have clear records. Even the Greeks were plagued with the rot of disenchantment and existential angst, 3000 years ago. Read some Spengler and Nietzsche to understand. Or better yet, some mythology to gain perspective and peace with the way of the world.
We're in the depths of the dark age. We're past the midpoint, but you and I won't live to see the iron age return. Humanity will work our way back up the wheel to a golden age again, over the millenia. And in the meanwhile, we'll continue to have sunny days and small reasons to keep going and strive towards a better future for those we pass the baton to.

I liked TFA when I first saw it in theaters and only started to think it was bad when I realized how much it was repeating from OT and how little of what was being set-up was ever realized. Looking back the most interesting thing to happen in it that is completely unlike anything else was "TRAITOR", but we can't explore the fact that all these New Empire troops are volunteers because then we'd be portraying the fascists as something other than strawmen. Like c'mon, give me a fully developed three-dimensional character who is still fully flawed and in the wrong, I can be trusted to not idolize them. All that to say, the color palate of TFA never entered the equation for me even if it had a lot of great visuals.

>grey & white
>blue & orange
>blue & brown
>sandy brown & black
>black & white
>red & silver
>blue & orange again
>black & gold again
>gold & warm brown
There is technically a larger color being cherrypicked here than there was cherrypicked from TFA, and it does create some scenes that have that beautiful coloration due to being fully rendered or matte paintings, I can't tell and don't care enough to look it up. It's been much longer since I saw TPM than TFA so I remember even less of the story from this one even with all the discussion of historical revisionists who come out saying "the political drama and stupid swordfights with the slapstick guy are good, actually", so I can't say whether TPM has the same sort of great visual moments despite a lackluster story that TFA did. Also they still knew how to shoot dark scenes so you could see what's happening.
The real point is that neither of these flicks come within a country mile of any Technicolor picture because they both focus on Realism or Heightened Reality rather than going for the purely fantastical.

portra 800 is the older vision 2 shit so it's way more vivid

Technicolor is a renowned, highly saturated color motion picture process, famously used in Hollywood's Golden Age films like The Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind. Developed by Technicolor Motion Picture Corporation, it used a specialized three-strip process to create vivid color prints. It redefined cinematography before being largely replaced by cheaper methods.

Key Aspects of Technicolor:

Three-Strip Process (1932): Technicolor cameras used a beam-splitting prism to split light into three separate black-and-white strips: red, green, and blue. These were later dyed and combined for high-quality, rich color.

Aesthetic & Usage: Known for its vibrant, vivid look, it was popular for musicals, fantasies, and epic films (e.g., Fantasia, The Adventures of Robin Hood).

Color Control: The company, often guided by color consultant Natalie Kalmus, imposed strict standards on color usage in productions, ensuring the best results for their unique process.

Evolution: Began in 1915 as a two-color process (red/green) and later matured into the superior three-color system.

Decline: The process was expensive and required specialized cameras, leading to its decline as easier, single-strip color films (like Eastmancolor) became prevalent in the 1950s.

it's LIGHT
LOTS OF LIGHT
I explain this in every thread, cinemtaographers today DONT KNOW how, or DONT WANT to or are NOT ALLOWED to light a set like they used to be, so the modern trends are

>dogmatic adherence to natural light sources
>aversion to use hard fill light
>agressive colorgrading to maintain continuity between shots
plus
>lack of talent / cultural context / basic human physiology
they dont understand that their job isnt to capture all the information in a coherent way along the whole production, THEIR JOB IS to create a BEAUTIFUL IMAGE that will GUIDE THE ATTENTION OF THE EYE TOWARDS A NARRATIVE GOAL shot by shot and scene by scene

What's the point? There is no agreed upon established standard for what's a good film. A more reasonable approach is asking you try to come up with reasons why modern movies would be bad, which you can't do. The old directors didn't vanish, the technology keeps getting better, and people have higher "media literacy" now as well.

The real issues are poor economy, the average and above average viewer having little to no market awareness, media landscape having shifted focus to other formats, and to a degree further loss of societal heterogeneity. You think movies are bad now because you can't participate in them anymore in the way you did before. You don't know what's coming out, monoculture is dead, everything moves way, way faster now, making you who grew up in a different era feel alienated. as long as most movies and shows are written by women, homos and minorities and produced by women, homos and minorities and made for the global market, it's still woke shit

Nobody liked those things, they were half a pyramid scheme done during the decayed shithole years of New York City.

I don't mind them, but I can understand for older people they stuck out like a sore thumb when looking at the skyline.

2012 wasn't supposed to be the end of the world, it was supposed to be the end of the 13th baktun of the Mayan calendar which began in 1618. It just so happened that the 13th baktun was supposed to be the final baktun of a larger cycle which began in 3114 BC. So it wasn't the end of the world, it was basically the equivalent to the end of a millennium.

people are such pussies today, man. we need to go full-time of troubles. round up all the political elites and execute them by putting them in cages and drowning them in rivers. bring back the guillotine. line them up and shoot them with cannons.

2012 media has much more soul than 2013 media so it makes sense.
If you were to archive the "History of the 13th Baktun," you would find both a leather-bound copy of Crusoe and a jagged, low-resolution screenshot of a Minecraft Alpha world in the same crate. Frozen would have to wait for the next shipment.

What is this dumb goblina blabbering about? Technicolor was literally still in business right up until 2020 and its IPs and patents are now owned by Vantiva.
>>
>>219666880
he's talking about three-strip technicolor, which has not been used for shooting since the 1950s and for distribution since Apocalypse Now Redux
