>>219640517surprised people are hating on this so much, it's very entertaining
The director and the actors and even the VFX people admitted that Sphere was an unfinished film. They knew the film needed reshoots, it needed more time, but they didn't have the luxury of more time or money. It's impossible to avoid comparing it to the book because it's broadly actually a fairly faithful adaptation of the book, and some of the changes it makes are totally reasonable, but it struggles with visually conveying the slow creeping anxiety of the book and doesn't have anything to replace it with. For example, in the book, there is an entire plot arc about Norman being genuinely uncertain whether he has entered the sphere or not. Who is causing the manifestations? Is it him? His middle name, in the book, is Harrison. Harrison = Harry = Jerry. The scene where he enters the sphere is also missing, which cuts out a pretty important philosophical conversation with his subconscious. The book also has a highly ambiguous ending where Beth looks beautiful which implies one of three things.>She didn't give up her power and is using the power to reshape herself.>She wasn't the one reshaping her appearance. It was Harry or Norman. The whole point of the book is that all the characters already knew how to reshape reality with their minds. It's how they were able to get the door open.>There is nothing supernatural going on. She looks beautiful because she is finally at peace. The film captures the broad strokes of the story, but it loses the interesting esoteric nuances.
>>219640517this movie is really badthe one redeeming scene in the entire film is where sam's character says>mmm i love eggsit's hilariousthe book is rlygud tho
I think the biggest problem Sphere has is that Event Horizon does basically everything it does better. And Event Horizon had even more severe production issues, and it came out the other side better. Sphere is worth watching, but it just doesn't have the raw sauce that Event Horizon does because it clips its own wings by not going intellectual. Michael Crichton books draw their power from psychology, from the examination of the self. The movie barely skims that. And it doesn't have banger lines like, "If you could see the things I've seen, you wouldn't try to stop me."
>>219645103Never heard of it but do look forward to more Pfeiffer films. I was enthralled by wolf with Jack Nicholson and ultron as a kid. American and mexican tv channels would play it and the climax is always hype af! The YouTube short of Nicholson dressing down Pfeiffer for relying on being beautiful is going wild.

Not a movie, a miniseries that’s more like a series of movies each with their own story but one of the best things I’ve watched in recent memories. Absolutely soul crushing but the visual storytelling is unparalleled
One of my favorite crime kinos and it surprises me more people don’t know about it or talk about it, it’s pretty twisted.
>>219663448No, his middle name isn't Harrison in the movie. In the book, his name is Norman Harrison Johnson. He's Norman Goodman in the film. The scene of Norman entering the sphere is missing we never get:>“The ability to imagine is the largest part of what you call intelligence. You think the ability to imagine is merely a useful step on the way to solving a problem or making something happen. But imagining it is what makes it happen.>This is the gift of your species and this is the danger, because you do not choose to control your imaginings. You imagine wonderful things and you imagine terrible things, and you take no responsibility for the choice. You say you have inside you both the power of good and the power of evil, the angel and the devil, but in truth you have just one thing inside you--the ability to imagine.”The film is really, really truncated. In the book there's an entire section where it's a paranoid mystery over whether Harry, Beth, or Norman are responsible. Beth who is growing more beautiful by the minute (a trait shared by the wife in Prey, another Crichton novel) is in complete denial that she went into the sphere. That's another thing. The book heavily hints that it's not a space-ship at all. Reading between the lines, it became an American space-ship because Harry insisted it wasn't alien. The probe did not see any English writing on the ship. They only "discovered" the writing when they approach the doorway in person. When they enter the ship they keep "discovering" things right when they're talking about them. The key element of the book is that humans already know how to manifest reality. The sphere does not give them this power. It merely helps them understand the power they already have. Once Beth has the power the layout of the ship begins to change noticeably. But it's strongly implied it was maybe always changing. Just more subtly. Becoming what they expected it to be. 99% of this was cut from the film.
An incredibly kino 80s thriller.

I will never shut the fuck up about it either I guarantee you that:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5X08OUDI_oOften compared to 'Sphere' due to time period and superficial reasons, (underwater, early CGI, etc.), but it's better by a mile.Oddly this movie is the first answer that comes to mind for a lot of threads on this board, and general movie questions:>Post underrated kino>Obscure WWII movie>Good submarine movie>Good war movie>Good character-driven film>Good atmospheric horror>Ambiguity done well>Good psychological film>Interesting theme done well>Rewatchability>Unique combination of genres>Comprehensive use of a given setting>Efficient use of budget>Good unobtrusive use of early CGI>Good combination of real locations, movie sets, practical models, and CGI>Well written>Efficient script>Excellent casting>Excellent performances>Movies punching above their weight>Cool/imaginative/unique battle scenes>Films not populated with distracting A-listers and standard Hollywood faggotry>Films that never got a fair shot in terms of promotion>Films that slipped the net>Films that deserved much better>Films that deserve cult statusWatch it. You wont regret it. Join the 'Below' Naval Force and let more people know it exists. I wish Hollywood would make more cool shit like this.

>>219652098>be Jet Li>never make sequel to this kinoUnforgiveable. Yulaw is best Jet Li character by a mile.

>>219640517It's better than the book! That author is overrated as fuck.
>>219662164Solid hard ass Walter Hill flick.
>>219705034That was me you're welcome
>>219662184UNFATHOMABLY BASED
Michael (2011)It needs more recognition The main character is played by chudjak btw
>>219696411Yo they made a Gakuen Taikutsu movie?
Kate Beckinsale is uncovered... literally. Need I say more?
>>219645530>>219665869I love Sphere but even though I haven't read the book, I could still tell a lot of things were cut. Thanks for the rundown, senpai
Not sure why this was so coldly received. One of the greatest cold war spy flicks.
>>219707132Been wanting to thank you personally. Truly is a hidden gem.I still can't figure out why it's so obscure and underrated, especially on a site like this. It should be one of those films that comes up all the time. Do you think fags only see the superficial story and write it off as very basic low budget 'le horror', rather than the deeper kino it is?I can't get over the fact I notice more and more cool details every time I watch it. You can tell someone really gave a fuck making this film. It's a damn shame it didn't get the recognition it deserved day one, or filters faggots for whatever reason.I'll admit the first ten minutes seem a little shaky, (the first time through), but that's an incredibly efficient set up you don't fully appreciate until later and especially on subsequent viewings. But once the action starts there's no way anyone with a brain couldn't get sucked in. I like how they basically use every part of the sub in cool ways, and even the depth charge scene is more original than any submarine shit I've seen. Very effective suspense and shit. It's kind of brave to trust the intelligence of the audience that much, especially with the ending. Not the kind of shit you see every day.
>>219705034>>219707132>>219707503Looks interesting. I'm not surprised it flew under the radar in 2002 with LOTR, POTC, even master and commander fighting for screens.
>>219647791I liked the little speech he gave to the drunk female doctor about why he couldn't let the drug smuggling go (and why he was staying to fight the hired guns) even if no one else cared or expected him to care.
>>219640549I hated Fiennes simp bitch character but Angela Bassett was cool as fuck in this. She stole the film.
>>219696650I came here to post this yesterday after watching it on one of the free LG channels two nights ago
>>219664429I am going to watch this. >>219665282Interesting! I have to watch it. Never seen a Polish TV series.
>>219709855i love this movie and all of the casting is perfect and most specifically i love lucy liu in this movie and nothing else. it's not a good movie.

>>219655756macy is always great
>>219665009Watched it a couple days ago, it's pretty good. Still can't get the song out of my my head.
>>219640517Bait thread.Sphere is an absolutely dogshit movie.

>>219673473No one liked Wild Things. We only liked Denise Richard's fantastic tits.Such a shame about what happened to her.
>>219711553>>219709855>i love this movie and all of the casting is perfect>it's not a good moviefits almost perfectly on that too, some amazing performances
>>219707246I liked the movie, but Kate Beckinsale can't keep her mouth shut. I get that they went for a "quirky autistic mouth breather" look but, c'mon, in literally every scene her mouth is open like she were a fish. It would be heckin funny if it DIDN'T RUIN THE MOVIE. It makes me angry.
>>219640517The ending ruins this whole movie. The book too.
>>219712253its very nearly>it was all a dream
>>219651058>If you want something that's ACTUALLY a hidden gem set on the ocean,Deep Star SixLeviathan
It was a genuinely good movie and it is a shame it made zero impact.
>>219640517The Shape Of Water
>>219713046>surf and turf
>>219651058Both too well known. You want something more like Harbinger Down or Blood Vessel.
>>219658942Triangle (2007) is the superior film
>>219712334Exactly. Worst type of ending. What was Crichton thinking? Did he just not know how to end it?
>>219714410probably the fault of almost all movies: they get worse and worse as they progress... now combine that with movies getting longer and longerit's no wonder hollywood collapsed
>>219712334>>219714410the andromeda strain wasn't too much better
>>219712358I fucking love this movie. It's like a really great Twilight Zone episode.
