The difference between the group of boys working together and surviving with minimal strife, and turning on eachother, is a woman. Not so much her mere presence driving men to do stupid things, particularly among a group of boys who probably aren't even attracted to girls yet, but the fact that her biology would force her to sow discord and force the men to thin out the herd and demonstrate who among them is the best provider/protector.
