Well, I disagree. Especially the cgi has aged poorly. And I am one of the few people that actually enjoys this movie (at least the raw alternative cut, that is somewhat closer to the vision of the director). I can understand all the poeple that dislike (not hate it, it is not that bad) this movie. It is an empty shell, or a crippled torse. I weep, knowing that we will never see the movie that Fincher envisioned.
But I still really like it. I like that it's dark. That it had the balls to kill off the other 2 survivors of Aliens right at the beginning and our beloved heroine in the end. It is a gritty successor to part 1 and more horror than part 2. It is at the same time deeple flawed because of the decision of some greedy executives and pencil pushers. And in an ironic way, that's the perfect metaphor for the weyland yutani corporation.

resurrection is also my guilty pleasure, just fyi

For me, 2 was more of a sci-fi action that heavily leans into horror. If something is this exciting, it takes away some of the tension that is build in a suspense horror movie.
And please don't take this as criticism. Aliens is still the best of all the Alien movies. Just not in the pure horror department.

Glad to see some sensible opposition in the thread. Alien 3 fandom should have been stamped out long ago. They hated us for telling the truth, and they had their way for some years, but I think the tide is finally turning. And it's about fucking time, too.

It's one of the most monumentally mismanaged franchises of all time. They had a smash hit with Aliens. Everyone wanted more, they were buying the toys, comics, games, vhs tapes, etc. Part 3 should have been easy money. They had an unlimited amount of choices to pick from to continue the series. Time skip just like the second movie did, then pick new characters, new location, exciting continuation of the story with expansion of the lore! Nah, let's just pick something boring and mean spirited like retconning the ending of the previous movie to say they didn't actually make it home safely but instead died on the way back haha. Aliens is still a horror film and it wouldn't even be up for debate if Alien wasn't structured like a slasher and had more than one Xenomorph. It's about as much of a power fantasy as Predator, but people think the Xeno was nerfed compared to Alien which is not true. The Xenomorph has a very hard exoskeleton such that it can survive getting soaked in molten lead but they explicitly state in the movie the marines are using weapons with armor piercing rounds and this is over 150 years into the future (and it still couldn't withstand such a rapid change in temperature anyway). It's still a creature made of flesh and blood at the end of the day, not a metal robot like the Terminator.

There's also zero action until an hour in but we do got multiple horror scenes before any action starts where the marines get slaughtered both times they engage directly with the Xenos, and Ripley barely won against the Alien Queen. There's also a graphic chestburster scene and two scary facehugger scenes just like the original. Xenomorphs are a bigger direct threat than zombies who are typically very easy to kill in any universe that isn't Return of the Living Dead but they still pose a threat in greater numbers and especially if they can run. There's no rule that says a horror film has to have only one single villain that takes the entire movie to kill it's just common outside of zombie media.
