High supply meant they weren’t as valuable and the area was also poor as fuck so they had less demand for workers. This just meant the value of human life was lower and people lived a more brutal animalistic existence. Go to Louisiana/Mississippi now and it’s still poor as fuck and feels 3rd world/underdeveloped even in comparison to Alabama. But slaves in Virginia would have multiple jobs sometimes and could earn enough to buy their freedom and their family’s freedom. For the most part being a white immigrant working in a factory up north was a much worse lifestyle than a house slave on a wealthy plantation. Part of the reason the confederacy fell is that their economic system just wasn’t that efficient since they didn’t actually get that much productivity from their slaves. If you worked a slave too hard they’d just run off and tracking them down wasn’t easy or cheap.
