Karl is the best
>>
The joy in Karl's cheer when Steve announces that he beat Ricky in the lighthouse conundrum brings a smile to my face.
>>
>>219747868
because gervais is a normie who thinks hes enlightened

>>219747998
whats the conundrum?
>>
No clue what Steve adds to the conversations
>>
>>219748090
Obviously I've just given you the answer but Karl puts a question to Ricky about there's a guy somewhere that turns the lights on when he goes to bed and turns the off in the morning and challenges Ricky as to why. Ricky can't work it out.

When Karl then reveals the answer, Ricky loses his shit and says that it doesn't work in any way and Karl is a moron. Steve then chimes in to say that it makes perfect sense to him and Karl has won!

https://youtu.be/CiNOqHCn55k
>>
Has Ricky ever admitted he's been wrong or didn't know something, like ever?
>>
Don't pretend that Karl isn't still an idiot 90% of the time
>>
>>219747868
You're a retard lol no I won't explain why or how I know
>>
>one face two bodies
>>
>>219748679
the classic example is of course

https://youtu.be/CiNOqHCn55k

where gervais knows he’s wrong at the end so he stops arguing.
>>
Right, right stop it, you're talking shit

Karl: Conjoined twin got run over in 1867. I was just wondering why he didn't look both ways...

>>
>>219747868
Ricky has no internal monologue.
>>
>>219748682
Karl is just differently clever.
He's rarely actually wrong about things.
He's the kind of person who somehow got through life entirely on street smarts, while avoiding education.

Ricky on the other hand is a midwit who reads books so he can pretend he's wise.

>>

>>
>>219748114
He's there to be even more annoying than Rick as a way of redirection annoyance away from him.
You'll listen to an episode and no matter how annoying Ricky was, Merchant was way more annoying and that is what you'll remember.
It is genius.
>>
>>219751605
Good lack!
>>
My favourite is when Ricky is completely wrong about the infinite monkeys thing and shouts and screams at Karl about it everytime, and even when someone emails in about how Ricky is wrong about it being guaranteed just because "infinity sorts it all out" he just stumbles over his words and gets flummoxed, before just going back to stating how he's correct about it (without making any attempt at saying why other than "infinity sorts it all out")
>>
>>219751951
>He's there to be even more annoying than Rick as a way of redirection annoyance away from him.
As it needs something as uniquely fatuous as a Pilkington to excite more even contemptuous hostility than a Gervais you're probably right.

Reminds me of that other woman that's in the early pre Karl tapes, forget her name but she was really annoying with a really annoying voice. From what i heard she quit because of something Karl said to her as well, wasn't even anything very offensive from what i recall

Listen again, Karl says a lot of retarded shit, it's not "differently clever", it's just unintelligent
>>
>>219752967
Yeah people severely over glaze karl. He occasionally says normal things as opposed to always retarded shit like the rice is right, so then people call him a secret genius. Any time he gets one over ricky like the typewriters or the clone identity he doesn't understand the counterpoint in the way people are saying. Like he just straight up thinks monkeys won't write shakespeare, he's not thinking of infinitely repeating sets.

Literally 2 minutes into the very first episode of the podcast Karl is moaning about new inventions
>my things with ipods is, do we need em?
>do you need a plane, really?
>since the invention of the telly, you don't have to go that far to see it
>>
>>219753111
>Podcast
The podcasts were a lot more scripted and faked than the radio show clearly, they even repeat many of the stories and pretend they were hearing it for the first time, Karl was clearly asked to turn up his stupidity as well just because they knew it would generate the most listens and fame.
I understand that this is how basically all talk show style media is of course, and even in the radio shows they were putting on characters, but it's turned up to 11 on the podcasts and they went too far with it. Still enjoy the podcasts, but can't compare to series 1 and 2 of xfm
>>
>>219753111
Anyone who has spent time in Yorkshire/Manchester knows people like Karl. Arrogant laziness where there's no merit to knowing or doing anything they don't already do and the way they currently do things is the best way. Anything else is posh and weird. Biscuits, tea, tipping point on tv and twice a year holiday to tenerife. He's very blatantly not an act even if on the podcast they retell some stories as if it's the first time.
>>
>>219751649
Literally how is he a mongoloid?
You can watch the entirety of An Idiot Abroad, and he's basically just right about everything. A lot of the world is weird and grim, and a lot of people are rude and unpleasant, and people pretending to be enlightened and enriched by travel are making it up.

A lot of his points from the radio shows like saying we aren't going to solve hunger in Africa by giving them more food, were also correct, and simply not things that you're *supposed to say*.
Saying "how would I know which one was me if they copied me?" was a legitimate point that Ricky laughed off as being nonsense.
The creatures in Gremlins were called Mogwai.
>>
>>219753111
I agree with that. Why did we need iPods?
>>
>>219753479
He tried to cook sausages in a toaster, thinks riding a bike uphill is easier than walking it, and genuinely thought they’d gene spliced a man with a biscuit.
>>

the realest thing I've ever seen on TV is when Karl is in India and he's miserable because it stinks of shit. That's real life, right there. Almost shocking they allowed it on TV.

>>219753602

>>
>>219748682
There's no need to pretend. Karl is laying down truths left and right because he isn't afraid to intuit.
>>
>>219748656
Didn’t watch but if it’s the one I’m thinking of that’s quite an old riddle I remember solving it at summer camp when I was 11 in like 05’ lol
>>
The most frustrating thing about Karl is that he'll insist on continuing to be wrong even after being repeatedly corrected. Perfect example os when they discuss the poison frog thing, Karl repeatedly comments on this wild frog going around biting 100 men despite Ricky and Steve consistently correcting him, and then he proceeds to get frustrated at the animal he made up in his head.
>b-but thats just the podcast!!
Karl has always been a hardheaded whinger even in the XFM days. Constantly bitching about having to do work when he has the easiest fucking job and he doesn't even do it well (so called 'producer' letting hosts sip tea directly into mics and laugh loudly with no leveling). Karl is the quintessential example of a broken clock.
>>
>>219752836
Steve is a great foil to the show once Karl becomes third mic because as much as he tries to mediate and keep Ricky from shutting Karl down all the time, Karl treats him like a freak of nature and is absolutely brutal toward him which is made even more funny by how obviously cripplingly insecure Steve is. They all definitely needed each other, I don’t think any of them could be brilliantly funny on their own but the dynamic the three of them have together is great.

Ricky is an unironic retard with no self awareness, the podcast needed Steve to moderate and tell Ricky when to STFU. Otherwise Karl would never finish a story.

I love English culture and history and find it fascinating that an island country the size of Washington and Oregon state combined (Scotland included) could have such a variety of culture and regional differences. We have that here in the States, but it's usually the difference of 500-1000 miles and entirely different climes before regional cultural differences are apparent. In England you travel 100 miles and the local culture can be completely different. You are also a very wordy and prolific bunch when it comes to the arts, especially literature and television/movies. I cannot imagine a region the size of you in America being its own distinct culture outputting as much as you do with such variety.

The ultimate redpill is that both Karl and Ricky were arrogantly naive in 2 different ways. Both absolutely insisted their worldview was the de facto outlook on life and got annoyed whenever it was challenged. That's probably why they got on so well. Never forget all the objectively shitty lazy behavior Karl has excused or enabled in the past. From his dad thieving to his slacking off at work, and he always refuses to admit he was wrong. Just like Gervais.

He's actually got some good points, like when he went to look at Petra(?) he was like "I'd rather live in the cave over there than inside Petra, because you wake up in here and look out and all you see are these cave holes. He doesn't have the knowledge to understand things like how gene splicing works, and honestly how many people do, Karl at least admits that he doesn't know all the facts, but with what he does know he isn't afraid of trusting his senses and calling things as he sees them. So he ends up looking smarter than people who base their knowledge on what people around them are saying instead of the apparent truth gathered from base principles.
He's smart enough to think for himself.

He thought the "100 monkeys giving 100 typewriters" thought-experiment was a statement on the nature of chimp intelligence or evolution, rather than a statement on statistical probability and inevitability (with any number of "monkeys at typewriters" being intended to be functionally interchangeable with a computer or some similar machine that can continously generate random combinations of letters for sustained periods of time).

There are numerous varying IRL situations where it is extremely practical & convenient, if not necessary, for someone listening to an electronic source of audio to be able to do so in total isolation and be the only one able to hear it, rather than it being audible to everyone in the immediate vicinity like it is with a typical electronic speaker or something.
Nearly any time someone is in public can serve as an example: Riding on a bus or train, being in a library, waiting in the waiting room of the doctor's office, etc.
Other situations might include one roommate or one spouse listening to electronic audio, but the other roommate or spouse is currently doing something that requires no audible interruptions, etc.

There: Literally just off the top of my head, numerous and frequently-encountered real-world examples of situations we're having isolated electronic audio is preferable or outright necessary. And I'm not even somebody who's "researched" this topic or anything prior; literally just off the top of my head. And I could easily come up with more.
Were those situations seriously ones you couldn't come up with/imagine yourself? Did you really need somebody else to name those situations for you? Were you legitimately "drawing a blank" prior to that?

Karl is of course very very very stupid. But Ricky annoys me because he does some sort of lame appeal to authority where you can tell he's vaguely familiar with a concept, generally when speaking about science, be it natural or humanities, but realizes halfway through the sentence he's not quite as sure of himself as he makes out.

>>219767186
Nail on the head.
>>
>>219767366
Yeah people think he beat Ricky but he brings up a 'study' in which 8 monkeys spent a month with a computer and produced nothing. There may be flaws with the infinity hypothesis but Karl literally just opposes it on the idea chimps could write Shakespeare.
>>
>>219759475
>Ricky can't explain why he's wrong though
Are you saying that you expected Ricky to explain WHY the word "dictionary" would, indeed, be defined in a dictionary? There's literally no reason to. That explanation should be self-evident. It make more sense for someone to need to explain why "dictionary" WOULDN'T or shouldn't be defined in a dictionary, or at least WHY it would ever be "surprising" that it was.
>>
>>219767465
Imagine still being an Apple fag in 2026.
>>
>>219762608
This.

Karl's a lower-than-average IQ dolt. He literally doesn't understand (and may even be incapable of understanding) even mildly complex or counterintuitive concepts. This does, however, make him at least somewhat aware of his OWN level of ignorance and open to being informed with new information, at least in regards to certain topics (although he is also demonstratably capable of being oblivious to his own laughable lack of knowledge as well, which is arguably more frequent for him out of those two possibilities).

By comparison, Ricky is a typical example of an insufferable midwit: Capable of at least an average level of understanding of nuance & complexity on certain topics and at least sees some inherent value in knowledge & learning for its own sake, but also suffering from the typical Reddit-level Dunning-Kruger Effect where he grossly overestimates his knowledge, understanding & competency. This leads to semi-frequent situations where he confidently or even dogmatically argues an objectively incorrect point or disproven statement.
>>
>>219765227
What is "Petra" in this context?
>>
>>219767581
Nothing in the post you replied to mentioned Apple or any of their products.
>>
>>219761413
Ricky's dogmatic atheism has nothing to do with his midwit level of understanding of basic science or science-related concepts. It has everything to do with the fact that he likes to have other men put their dicks in his bum during his free time.

>And the only people who can carry it are these...sort of hooded fellas
>This didn't happen
>Little hooded fellas with sort of hairy feet
>Karl if it turns out these people are in any way smallfolk we're never doing this segment again
>So these little fellas say alright we'll take the ring and chuck it in the fire an that
>He actually believes this..
>Anyway so these fellas destroy the ring and take off their hoods
>Turns out..
>Little hobbit fellas

I'm don't think he's intelligent in general, but he's creative and funny (intentionally) and his mind works in a way that's different enough from mine that I find it interesting.

If you're smarter than Karl why is he richer than you?

That's more Ricky's thing.
Karl's thing would be hearing that and thinking they're sending them a meal and then tomorrow they'll just have to send them another meal and that the Africans are just being lazy

When they have the whole Gremlins discussion where Ricky is convinced that Karl can't remember the word "gremlins", when in fact he's trying to remember "mogwai", Ricky does correct himself after the ad break.
Doesn't stop him from bringing it up again on a later date, going "this is the dumbest thing you've said since 'what are the creatures in Gremlins called!'". He either forgot that he was wrong back then or just didn't care.

>somehow got through life entirely on street smarts, while avoiding education
I was trying to describe Karl the other day and I think this is a good assessment. If he had been properly educated, I think could have been quite successful. Though I feel he's happy exactly where he is. If anything, more intelligence might've made him depressed.

Karl Pilkington's glazers are even worse pieces of shit than Ricky Gervais's.

They were great to listen to, but it occurred to me eventually that I would hate all three of them if we ever met. Ricky is an obnoxious adhd dunning kruger dickhead, Steve is very similar to Ricky, but less hyperactive and with 100% more insecurities, and Karl is just an ignorant, miserable northern arsehole.

maybe the practicality is actually a two edged sword, and now we're enslaved to technology that we can hardly get away from?
Maybe it's good for the human mind to endure periods of silence and contemplation, and people are fucking themselves up by existing in a world of endless amusements?
>>
>>219785558
The fact that they're all assholes is what makes the show work.

Series 1 and 2 Karl was still plenty stupid, by series 3 they just started being more hostile towards him. S1-2 are super cozy though and you can hear Karl laughing and shooting the shit a lot more freely. He's def more on guard later in the show
