In Series 9 episode 11 "Heaven Sent", we see a pile up of skulls in the water after The Doctor has been stuck in his loop for 700 years, yet by 4.5 billion years there doesn't seem to be an overflow of skulls. Surely long before he breaks out of the confession dial, the amount of skulls dropped in a concentrated area would be so high that they pile up above the waterline and make it so that when The Doctor jumps out of the window, he is killed instantly on the hard pile of bones. Standalone pre-Rose stories, nothing special. Largely that comes down to the fact that Eccleston quite candidly joined Big Finish because he needed work during COVID. He's not phoning it in, exactly, but you get the sense that he isn't super interested in taking his Doctor any further than what we got on TV and the scripts rarely challenge him on that front. There's clearly been a deliberate choice from him and the writers to make 9 much lighter. He sounds at times like he didn't revisit his episodes to check how he pitched his performance originally -- his voice in these is a lot lighter, breezier. Similarly there's no direct reference to the Time War or 9's survivor's guilt, which are major aspects of the character just left on the table. He plays the part well enough and it is nice to hear him as the Doctor again, but it's just not QUITE the part as seen on TV. The only 9DA I'd say to outright avoid is the first boxset, Ravagers (because pic rel). It's especially fucking poor, almost completely nonsensical. After that, the rest of the stories have been pretty consistently decent in quality, if somewhat lightweight. I'm hoping they get stronger as they go. Billie Piper joined in on these audios as well last year, so maybe that changes things up a little?TL;DR: if you want more Eccleston, these will satisfy, but don't except anything more than that. And the two standouts for me so far have been:>Planet of the End>Monsters in Metropolis (which is his first Cyberman story)
