The pilot episode of Lexx is one of the best TV pilots I've ever seen. The rest of the series doesn't measure up

Seasons 1 and 2 are great. The rest fell apart. But really, once you destroy the whole universe where else is there to go?

i downloaded the whole show a couple of years ago, and yep, the pilot is truly special, it oozes style. it's like one of those grimy 90s videogames like bad mojo or sanitarium or phantasmagoria. i really loved it. then the episode after that, the one with tim curry was fucking painful and meandering. couldn't finish it and gave up on my rewatch. i should have powered through, i've regretted it since, but i also never mustered the energy to give it another chance.

-Andromeda's power level is inconsistent
>>
>>219772526
A 7/10 is above average and a great show that everyone would watch. Most shows strive to be a 7/10 and fail. You're likely meaning to say 3/10 which would mean a below average show and bad.

This show reminds me a lot of Dr. Who from the Eccleston / Tennant era. Maybe it's the high concept nature, the early cgi effects, or a combination of both.
>>
>>219749817
The show is like the most wasted potential of the 90s scifi kino era where every cool idea they introduce is hampered by bad pacing, bad acting, shitty effects work (even for TV), or just plain bad writing with retarded DUDE SEX LMAO jokes.

If you wanted heady thoughtful sci-fi, you had Star Trek TNG and DS9. If you wanted weird looking sci-fi with cool effects, there was Farscape and Babylon 5. If you wanted comedy you had Red Dwarf and later Futurama.

The main problem imo is the protagonist, Stanley. While I realize what they were going for, a complete inversion of the masculine hero, and making him a whiny little worm instead, but this doesn't actually work for a sci-fi series. No one wants to come back week after week to root for a "hero" that is pathetic and weak. You need a strong protagonist. Also the robot head guy is annoying as fuck.

>No one wants to come back week after week to root for a "hero" that is pathetic and weak
It's worse if you marathon it, I only found out about it when I saw the DVD boxset was only 20 bucks and figured 67 episodes for a series I never heard of must be at least worth seeing once. Then by disc 3 I was tired of Stanley's bitching, the retarded innuendos, the robot heading crushing on Zev, and Xenia Seeberg's nightmare bogged face and shit acting.

It's an acquired taste. By which I mean the show is overall not very good outside of meme moments like the constant sex jokes and imagery that stops just short of being an HBO show, the bad CGI, any scene with Kai, or Zev going from a German cutie to a bogged up bimbo that seems like she can't remember her lines.

You could almost say the show is like a giant shitpost.

This shit blew my mind when I first discovered it back in its original day. You can reach and say "it's not really unique" and find other examples of oddball surrealist/perverse stuff in more adult contexts but just the way it was presented and delivered as a homey afternoon broadcast show was like opening a door to world of weirdness we'd never experienced before.

It's still a trip to watch today. Objective "ratings" don't work for a show like this. You watch it to get into the spirit in which is was made, spare me this "7/10" crap

Yeah I just started on Andromeda too. It's got a lot of heart, I like all the little philosophical quotes at the start of each episode. I like it overall but it's kind of clumsy on the worldbuilding. The Nietzchians and Magog as adversaries are fine but we don't get to see much of "normal" life in the galaxy and why it's so bad that Dillon needs to fix it. Like the first time we see anything involving something other than them, it's the hacker guy going to a surfing competition, and then there's some aliens straight out of season 1 TNG with teleporter tech so we can have an emotional episode where Dillon says goodbye to his wife. Which is weird because that's like two episodes in season 1 that both involve randomly going back in time 300 years to when he first got caught. Like they had the first idea, then they were like "shit that wasn't very good, wait I got a better script" and did that one too.

I wish the ship was more overpowered and they had crazy adventures that way. Like they had those "nova bombs", but after that storyline fucked off it's just random "faceless bad guys start shooting at us, all systems down" without any real content, just the show stumbling trying to find its footing.
I guess I just want another Farscape. Even Dark Matter gave us a closer look into everyday space life for its universe's inhabitants.

I do really, really like the subplot of the shipwaifu's robot avatar being really horny for Ksorbs, though. But I'm television literate enough to predict that I bet they drop that ball and don't do anything good with it.

It's a low budget canadian television sci fi show that pushed the bar for what was acceptable to present. It's designed as an anti-Star Trek featuring a cast of misfits and misanthrope anti-heroes in control of a powerful superweapon living ship. It's full of sexual and gross weirdness but also has pretty interesting worldbuilding and backstory. By the standards of what you can watch TODAY, it's pretty silly and tame. It isn't really all that porny. But at the time it was a fun, wild, ridiculous romp. It's like the kind of stuff you could see at a burlesque/freak show. Cannibals, raving madmen, love slaves, undead assassins, graboids, lecherous space rentacops, rapist robot heads.

Unironically yes. Imagine if at the end of every Star Trek episode where some asshole planet gives the crew a hard time, they just turned the ship around and blew it up.
>>
>>219782886
>I wish the ship was more overpowered
Yeah I was gonna elaborate more on this but the capcjas were being retarded.
I'm imagining a show where Dylan Hunt can just go around solving local problems with no issue, but then when he tries to do things on a larger scale (ie reforming the Commonwealth) he has trouble because he is just one ship. Sure he can save a single colony or ship without a problem, but he can't take on the entire fleet of another empire.
Instead, the Andromeda is getting its ass kicked 5 seconds into the fight.
You know what they should have done? Instead of making his ship a big flagship, just make it a little destroyer. Make it super high tech, but also super fragile. Then they can really lean into the underdog aspect of it all. And you wouldn't need to constantly write around the small crew.
>>
>>219782961
>Killjoys
Oooo I never finished watching this. I remember enJOYing that show. A great way to KILL some time
>>219782886
Excellent post. Yeah the show feels unfocused. I would think one of the first things Dylan Hunt would do is get a low down on the political situation. Like who are the top dogs and what are their current conflicts and such.
Also we never learned how the mechanic/hacker guy did in the surfing tournament. It's so obvious they did that because they didn't want to write that character for that episode.
However, becka's (the blonde lady) subplots have been nice. The episode with her brother and the episode with John de Lancie were both interesting (but the John de Lancie episode had an obvious missing scene)

They fight a cosmic horror type bad guy (think Hastur) and then literal Satan himself, then come to Earth to have stupid sexy adventures.

Think the average European scifi porno comic you find in Heavy Metal magazine, toned down for cable TV and played for laughs ala a Blake Edwards sex farce. That's Lexx...
>>
>>219787777
i wasnt gonna but then i saw the quads
so the story starts off in the light universe. There is this huge empire ruled by His Divine Shadow who had just finished building a biological, bug like space ship with the ability to destroy (and eat) planets.
Long story short the main cast steals the ship and set off to get laid but run into all kinds of shenanigans along the way.
Theres Xev- shes a sex slave but only got half of the programing before she escaped
790- hes a robot head that got the other half of Xevs programming. as a result he is madly in love with Xev
Stanley- hes a loser that almost nobody likes
Kai- hes dead

Really for Lexx all you need to do is watch Season 1 episode 1 + 4.
The rest of the series has some good episodes spread throughout, but the juice isn't worth the squeeze. What's frustrating is sometimes an episode will start off great, then turn into a boring slog halfway through.

Bumping this thread for Zev's boobies
>>
Zev was the cornerstone of the show's identity and marketing. When they planned season 2 and it came to a point where they were only going to be able to have her for x number of filming days, I would have simply truncated my season arc into another mini movie or two with her and wrapped it up. Only an excellent villain saves the show, and the show does not coalesque its identity around him, but tries to stay glued to Xev (now with an X, lip filler, and fake boobs). I recall the show fondly and I'm glad I watched it, but I didn't watch to the end. Gave up on a beach reality show spoof episode set on Earth in the last season. I doubt I had many episodes left but I'm just not interested. I'm sure I experienced much better between the first episodes and the start of the Prince fire/water planets season. It's rare for me to feel like that about a show, I mean, I watched the last season of Scrubs.

So…the most dangerous weapon in two universes is a incomplete dragonfly?
>>

yeah but it shoots some shit that makes planets instantly explode
I think they might've once exploded a star too, but I might be misremembering things

The bio-ship that eats planets? Sounds scary to me.

Why so skeptical? It blows up planets. Duh

What's incomplete about it? You want the bug to have wings? In space??

NTA but something that I can't recall. Probably putting His Divine Shadow conscience inside it or something.
>>
>>219796193
hey this show has a giant space spider spinning invisible space webs
Lexx having wings isn't that outlandish of an idea

ok, so hire some practical fx artists then
>>
>>219797061
Sorry Anon but we have a budget and pAIjeet could do it for 1/100 of the price. Most of the audience don't even care about quality anyways, just make it flashy, or blurry or both.
>>
>>219797221
We have the worst of both, jeets doing cgi and the budgets are even more bloated

People don’t appreciate Xev enough, she’s supposed to be a satire of an over-idealized “sexy” woman, which made Xenia the better fit. Also, I refuse to believe those aren’t her natural lips until someone can find a “before”photo.
>>
>>219750128
You mean Australia vs Canada vs Canada.
>>
>>219797543
You're not the only one, Zev is prettier but Xev fits better the "living blowdoll" idea of the character. That's a common opinion on Lexx threads.

>over-idealized “sexy” woman
Doesn't work though. Such women aren't as sexy as their supposedly less sexy counterparts.

I hate this argument. Give me a year and a few hundred K and I will go down to home depot and joann's fabrics and make your stupid fucking shit for you holy fuck it makes me so angry. NASA couldnt even get away with "muh lost artform", people pissed and shat until they fucking unlost it. What makes fucking Viacom think it can claim making fake fucking props and bloodpacks and shit is impossible now? The fucking gall of it. There should be some way to take them to fucking court and legally force them to admit they just want to pay pajeets to do it as cheap as possible so they can save money for fancy cars and gay sex with trafficked children i hate them so fucking much

It's human. The artist is named Ahriman and he drew tons of these images for various movies/shows like Aliens, Terminator, etc.

Ever consider the reason the thing prequel had all the practical effects replaced by CGI was because they looked like shit? The only footage we have of them is grainy, low resolution, “behind the scenes” footage of them.
>>
>>219759785
I used to pump it to Xev.
>>
>>219780551
The first time I saw “lexx” it wasn’t even called that. It was late night on showtime and it was something like “tales from a parallel dimension: I worship his shadow.” The intro was just the “didi-dididum” chant before diving straight in without explanation of anything.

hint: the ratings were for Andromeda, a totally different show.
>>
>>219801281
NTA but I find that extremely unlikely simply because, as you say, none of it has been released. You're telling me they have an entire movie's worth of spectacularly bad practical effects and they can't even find one scene that's so bad its just funny to put on the DVD release for the movie or anything like that? Fuck off.

One of the only shows where I like the singing episodes

>Zev was the cornerstone of the show's identity and marketing
CORRECT. Zev was plucky and actually a somewhat decent person. She was the moral center of the show and it was her impetus that usually got things done. Replacing her with Xev, yet another scummy sleazy person, gave the audience absolutely no foil and just muddied the waters. Also Xev is fuckin gross, I hated every moment she was on screen.
>>
I will always respect Lexx for the concepts it presents, but holy shit man, rewatching it as an adult I can't believe how agonizingly slow the pacing is. Every single scene is approximately 2 to 5 minutes too long, with information repeated multiple times throughout an episode. Even in the original 4 movie series, episode 2 becomes downright annoying with how slow the scenes play out and how little actually happens. I found myself saying "Get ON with it!" barely 15 minutes in.

It's like they had this good material, but really only had enough for 30 minutes, and decided for some reason to stretch it out to fuckin 90. Even season 2, they stretch 12-15 minutes of material into 45 minutes. It feels like this show would have worked better as a series of very tightly paced shorts that aired with another show or something.

except we have the grainy and out of focus "behind the scenes" footage of the practical effects and they "look good" because its not 35mm-70mm or 4k digital. You need a lot of camera tricks to make practical effects look good, and a lot of expertise behind that. no one on the thing prequel had any connections to john carpenter or anyone else to learn/know any of these skills.
