I haven't watched a lot of really old movies and it got me wondering how people's top 10s would change over the decades.
Not as in, "here's my top 10 of the 50s, my top 10 in the 60s", but imagine if it was the year 1950, what would your top 10 be, then move to 1960, what would your top 10 then be? How many new movies would end up in your top 10, how many old movies would remain.

I feel like a lot of 80s favorites would remain a long time, maybe forever for people, but the pre-1950 movies would quickly get replaced.

My top favorite films would mostly be films I have a personal attachment to, so my bias would be movies released when I was young, from the 80s, 90s and early 2000s. But if I was making a top "best movies ever made" and attempting to be objective, the list would mostly be movies from 1930-1965

I made a list of my favourite films recently. 2 films in my top 10 are from the 40s. White Heat and Double Indemnity. I'd imagine if I lived through the era they would still be in my top 10 but who knows.

you're crazy, people hung on to the B&W and silent eras like nothing else. Part of it was the physical media aspect, but color took away part of the artistry just like CG did after practical and digital after film. The way they use light is completely different. Silents are more visually dramatic because that's all they have.

If I were 30 in the 1950s I'd probably love war movies and the three stooges, then westerns and british or maybe japanese films by the 1960s. I hope I would love new hollywood in the 1970s but more likely technicolor spy and sci-fi slop from the previous decade would have my attention. Basically I'd catch up on all the kinos a decade late.

>White Heat and Double Indemnity
I'll watch one of them next and get educated

I really didn't enjoy Double Indemnity apart from the Edward G. Robinson role
Key Largo so far is the only 40s noir I've really enjoyed
I'll have to try White Heat though

white heat is better.

Double Indemnity is a soap opera, great acting and lighting but also not particularly interesting. The Postman Always Rings Twice and Gilda are the same

If you want a fun exciting noir watch pic related

It's difficult to answer because as you get older, and have watched more and more films; it becomes impossible to come up with a top 10 list; because there are simply too many good films.

Ya, you might be able to limit the question, like "what is your favorite gangster films" or "what is your favorite musicals"; but how, for example would you go about comparing Lawrence of Arabia to 42nd street or Marty?

The Sight and Sound polls make it very clear that people just seem to rate whatever they saw when they were younger.

oh, how so?

That’s how it tends to go

Where the Sidewalk Ends is pretty kino.
