I loved it. It's definitely more meditative than something you would expect out of Hollywood, though, so even though it sometimes presents itself as like this big samurai epic, just keep in mind that at its heart it's a contemplative show.

It was pretty good but I did feel let down that the entire show hypes up a final battle that never happens. The show has very little action, and what it did have was quite good, so yeah, I wanted more. Sorry guess I'm a brainlet.

Also the idea that the other lords just had their hands tied behind their backs so hard because of tradition and honor that they couldn't do anything and that was such a mastermind move from the shogun's part was just taken way too far and didn't feel true to history at all. In reality, like in all cultures, when you stand to lose too much you just break the rules and make exceptions in order to keep power. Tokugawa intentionally baiting them to break the rules and and lose prestige with the public would have been a smarter way that is also true to life, rather than them being like the frustrated corpo bad guys in a sports movie who throw off their headset and kick a chair as the underdog hero wins despite their attempts to sabotage him. At some point they would have just said "fuck honor, we'll execute the hostages, we'll do whatever the fuck, we'll excommunicate you, we'll coup the shit what are you gonna do about it?"

I appreciated how they didn't try to minimize the more brutal aspects of japanese society at the time, but it was hard to move on after that boiling pot sequence, shit's so horrific I don't understand how humans are so quick to inflict such pains on their fellow man, it goes on for such a long time too, like god damn what the fuck. A problem with modern tv series is they don't want to show domestic violence too much from the protagonists because they want them to be likable, but like really, if you had those extreme punishments be normal, then surely everyone must have beat their wives and family members mercillesly too, and for it even to be considered a virtue, no?
