I saw them twice, first time Gira was setting up his mic stand and a guy was taking a photograph and Gira lifted the stand and tried to stab him in the head narrowly missing him with the bottom hexagonal section of the thing. He had no issue with people filming the concert though. Always wondered why, he had a look of pure rage about him then, I was some 15ft away. Had he hit the man surely he'd fuck up the nascent concert. The show was probably the best I ever attended, an unrelenting tide of sound, like standing before a wall.

The second time was a few years back, a much more subdued, acoustic experience. Good, but emberly.

I also started reading his book at one point, seemed to be going somewhere. Has talent for that too. I saw Jarbo once at a small Belgrade NGO watering hole but I do not remember anything about it.

I still maintain that Gira's Angels of Light era where he discovered/mentored Devendra Banhart and Akron/Family was one of the coolest moments in music history. That 'New Weird America' modern freakfolk thing even crossed over into MySpace with people posting their songs on their profiles.

I'm now realizing this isn't /mu/ and most people won't know what the fuck I'm talking about. But it was awesome. Think that Joanna Newsom skit from Portlandia...

biopics of fringe music groups don't work. they just don't. best you can do is a 40 minute YouTube doc. There have been many good ones.

They did two biopics of Zappa and they both sucked. There was a short one of Beefheart that was pretty good.
