I hate how western animation is either aimed at kids or they go to the other extreme where it's like it's embarrassed to be a cartoon for an older audience so they make it gratuitously violent and edgy to prove how mature it is.
I don't know if it's a symptom of producers trying to cater to mouth breathers who watch shows for "aura" moments they can react to on tiktok or if the writers/directors are perpetually stuck with an adolescent mindset so they write what would be cool to a 14 year old.

Subverting expectations style twists = no narrative satisfaction. Subverting expectations style twists have primarily grown in reaction to:

So rather than just having, guy wronged by benders having a point, exploring that point, narrative conclusion and satisfaction. We get, cheap twists to surprise people which end up feeling hollow. Avoid one set of tropes, go into others. A Republic City festering with problems and an Avatar trying to balance the needs of different citizens is an interesting ideas. Except we got none of that. And in the end, non-bending representatives were added to the council anyway, problem solved!

The Legend of Korra was meant to be a more mature version of ATLA, going towards a more grown up audience. But instead we got plenty of pivoting towards romance and cheap twists over actually exploring any of these themes. All these themes could have easily connected together and really expanded the world but instead none of them mattered. How they were shown and how they interacted with Korra herself were tremendously bad. Every interesting world building theme was subverted. It is like someone creating what appears to be a good meal of substance that looks good but then you find they swapped out the ingredients part way through because someone on social media suggested it.
