Unironically if they had just rammed the iceberg head on they would have stayed afloat several hours longer and had time for Carpathia to actually reach them so the lifeboats could be used as short term shuttles as intended
it's possible even California's radio operator would have woken up and gotten the ship over in time

They would have stayed afloat indefinitely and sailed all the way to New York, even with their bow destroyed. The impact would have injured quite a few people though.

"berg" means "mountain" in a number of languages that have nothing to do with Jews.
Iceberg is derived from Dutch ijsberg, meaning ice mountain

They had horrible luck that the first berg spotted in the ice field was directly in front of them on a dark night with still waters.

They could have definitely survived a head-on collision, but the captain would have been crucified for the deaths it caused. They would have stressed that even if they failed to fully avoid the iceberg, it's unlikely 4 or more compartments would have been breached.

What happened needed to happen because of human hubris. It put the blame on everybody and showcased their ignorance. The amount of people that didn't take things seriously such as other nearby ships, to passengers and crew.

What if there had been a way to fishtail the ship and turn it sideways before hitting the iceberg? With a single blow to the side, not a scraping along the length.
Would that have been better than ramming the front straight into it?
>>
>>219770388
Real answer seems to be they should have done the same "port around" maneuver to steer around it, but maintaining the ship's forward speed, not stopping or reversing the engines which reduced the rudder's effectiveness and the ability to steer

This. Reversing the engines makes sense if you're gonna ram it head on. If you want to go around it, then maintaining speed is better. But ramming it is objectively the best course of action because you don't know what the iceberg looks like under the surface.

HOWEVER, hitting the iceberg would not have been an issue had the shipbuilder used proper, steel rivets on the hull. They were cutting costs and used sub-par, wrought iron rivets. These shitty rivets broke under extreme strain because of all the impurities.

>>

the iceberg was practically invisible because the moonlight was hidden by clouds that night, by the time the watchman actually spotted it, it was too late. it would have been physically impossible to sail around it at that point. the only option was either
reduce speed and turn, hoping to avoid a direct hit
or reduce speed and hit it straight on.

as others have pointed out already, hitting it straight on might have ended up saving more lives because of how Titanic was constructed. It would have sustained heavy damage, but its ability to float wouldn't have been compromised.

by steering and allowing the iceberg to scrape from the side, more watertight compartments were breached than Titanic could sustain, which led to its sinking.

What you say is true, but it wasn't cloud cover. It was a completely cloudless night, it just so happened that there was no moon that night. That's what made it so deadly cold, as well. Cloud cover would have meant the air was at least a little bit warmer, if not by much.

First Officer Murdoch fucked up and ordered engines stopped. It's been argued that because of the lack of propulsion, the ship couldn't turn properly and keeping it cruising or reversing might have saved the ship. But we'll never know.
