>>219775429Dude I've tried watching a number of famous and fairly recent horror movies and almost none of them are scary unless it's well done aliens or haunting. The Fourth Kind, Dark Skies, for alien moviesParanormal Activity series for hauntings. And Insidious...and Sinister. There you go, that's like all the scary movies. You know what wasn't scary at all that I saw recently? The Descent. That movie was not scary at all.
>>219775429There isn't any. A normal adult will never be scared by passively watching some silly scenes on the screen. Certainly not if you've been exposed to tons of similar movies and don't make any attempt to immerse yourself. You want scary, you're going to need to play a horror game, with no lights on, headphones, and the sound up.
>>219775694zamn
>>219775773I really don't get this film because all the behind the scenes seem really fucking sincere that this was a PSA. The director especially seems really sincere about the point of it. And yet it very quickly descend into the writer's barely disguised fetish.

>>219775429there’s a lot of genuinely scary movies out there but keep in mind that “scary horror movie” does not actually translate to “good horror movie”some of the scariest movies out there are actually extremely mid in every other aspect aside from how effective they are at being scary Some examples are Shelby Oaks and Undertone.

SinisterThe fourth kindMothman prophecies
basically, humans feel fear when they are in danger. since you're not in actual danger while watching a movie, the only way that movies will scare you is if you're willing to make yourself feel in danger by letting yourself become immersed in the film and letting yourself feel fear. to put it simply, you are not some tough badass because a fake movie isn't scary, you're just a dimwit>>219775694smile 3 looking good>>219775990that's some goofy shit man, just post some phasmophobia
>>219775935I recently saw Dark Skies and it was surprisingly decent.
Black Mirror’s Bandersnatch spooked meThere’s something about a video game (or at least, the ability to choose) that is a hell if a lot scarier than a film. Like if I control the character, I am a lot more anxious than if I’m just watching a character make decisionsthey need to make more choose your own adventure horror
>>219776178Okay, but I feel the overlap must be massive. If a movie succeeds in being scary, I feel like it also must have succeeded in other things like acting, pacing, and editing, because these are all things that contribute to whether a movie is scary or not. If those elements are bad and take you out of the experience, you can't really get that scared.I kinda get what you mean, because if you ask me what horror movie is the best and what's the scariest, I'll have different answers, but I can't imagine watching a horror movie, being scared, and not thinking it's at least good.
>>219776503No. Surviving Edged Weapons is a knife crime service video originally for law enforcement, it just happens to be kino because the scenarios are well shot.Megan is Missing is weird, the acting is super bad and on par with a Christian video about the dangers of drinking, talking online, premarital sex etc. But then the rape and torture stuff feel really seedy, especially given the cringe acting and stuff that came before it. When the girl is getting raped and the perpetrator's hand is placed near the camera, we see virgin blood. Like okay? The director seemed adamant and sincere that this was about dangers of the internet, they seemed like a real genuine person but then the rape and horror aspect feels like someone's perverted muderous sex fetish.Imagine if you were watching a film about I dunno, drug addiction, by some Christian group, and the acting was all cringe, don't do drugs my man, type dialogue, down with the kids etc. Then near the end, one of the kids gets violently raped because he did drugs and made wrong decisions. And you just watch some cringe actor being pounded. It would feel weird and jarring. Either you make a PSA or make a horror movie.
the movie is megan is missing but anons thinking this is bdsm porn confirms how satanic bdsm is, I mean it was sponsored by bergs just like most porn so it checks out.
might be a cliche list, but here's what i consider "horrifying">a nightmare on elm st>the taking of deborah logan>the exorcist (1973)>oculus>the shining
>>219777496>near the camera, we see virgin bloodahh ok so it's hentai, japanese hentai literally uses the virgin blood as a turn on
>>219775429This shit was kinda hot. Not even trying to be le edgy "I jerked off to the Irreversible rape scene huhuhuhu" poster but I legit got erect at the end of this movie. It reminded me of one of those horror porn videos.
>>219777678Go on Youtube and watch some of the interviews where the director (Michael Goi) talks about the film. He has a career as a cinematographer and has filmed a bunch of TV shows and films over the years. He seems very soft spoken, calm and sincere about the subject and this being a PSA which he researched. He wrote it in 10 days, shot in 8 and a half days, with actresses ranging in age from 13-17 on a budget of $35,000. And yet the gratuitous stuff in the film feels fully like a pervy exploitation film. Not a career cinematographer's PSA.
I guess it's labeled a thriller but enough horror there that I'd count it: Super Dark Times.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-nnMkMnFbIIt's just generally unsettling and believable.
>>219775429This movie was shit, but I like the theory that one of Megan's friends knew about the whole Josh thing and knowingly sent her to her death.
Only Victorian ghost stories are scary.Horror as a genre isn't supposed to be a scary genre.
>>219776394I wouldn't call The Poughkeepsie Tapes or the original Child's Play masterpieces just because they're the only movies that ever managed to scare me nor would I think The Shining or The Exorcist are any less of masterpieces just because I didn't think they were all that scary when everything else about them is perfectly done and I can confidently say they would've been worse movies without all the horror elements and so would a lot of other movies. But I guess this difference in attitude explains why ratings are usually all over the place for horror compared to other genres.

I'm too desensitized at this point, my first proper horror movie was Saw 2 at like 10 and it scared that shit out of me but now that over the top gory stuff just looks goofy. >>219786884Pulse wasn't scary and it was stupid. The only reason people like it is because the theme is topical today but that doesn't make the movie itself good.
>>219787533>Then what's scary to you? You basically just listed most of the subtypes of horror outside of monster movies which are always the least scary
>>219787484They're literally just near perfect rendition of a common haunting story. If you don't think having demons haunting your home is scary there are several places you could save money living at
It depends. Once you are an adult is not about what is scary but instead what makes you feel on the edge, constantly anxious about what is going to happen. Therefore, A movie just like terrifier 2 just hits the nail for me. There are also Martyrs, The House That Jack Built, and Antichrist, which are very difficult to watch and that I don’t want to see again. They leave you with a sense of unease after watching them, and, in my opinion, it’s almost the same feeling you get when watching a scary movie as a child.
>>219787695That's your opinion. I think it is, because there's all kinds of sadness and death and unexpected mysterious happenings and you don't know if you're ever going to get an explanation of what's going on and things escalate sharply with no warning or foreshadowing. I went into it blind, which I'm quite sure added to my experience of it.

>>219775429The tales from the darkside episode “the last car” still scares me to this day. Not just the visuals but the idea.
>>219775429This movie was hit as fuck. I jerked off to the scene where she’s getting pounded from behind so many times
The only movies that caused viceral fear for me was the Chucky movies but that fear kinda burned off of me as I grew older and realized the sequels literally became comedy movies. That movie relies on the premise of jumpscares and the fact inanimate small objects becoming easily concealed killing machines is something we can't really defend against in normal settings.I think the only thing that invokes fear is things that invoke your primal prey fear response. As you grow older you realize there is nothing that can really harm us as humans. Even bears are scared of us as humans and the standard protocol even against a grizzly or polar bear is to wave your hands like a madman and yell wildly like a barbarian to freak the fuck out of them. Running gets you killed instantly.Even light hearted movies like the gremlins have scary parts like when the woman is searching cabinets while 'can you hear what I hear' plays in the background for this reason. Tiny + lethal + easily hidden (jumpscares) makes horror.
>>219784330I really liked this movie. I don't remember finding it as terrifying as other horrors I love, mostly because some of the acting isn't great. It's not atrocious either and I like the Mad Men jew okay, but I never shit my pants like in Hereditary. The premise is really dope and visually it's awesome and claustrophobic, and it got me really intrigued in the catacombs IRL and I've spent a couple dozen hours looking through them on Youtube since, but I think the movie was really fun more than scary. Good for the genre because 90% of horror is garbage storytelling and it is hard to write it right, but this had a simple enough premise that nothing about it seemed challenging or deeply unbelievable beyond the supernatural aspect of it. All of the tropey stupid decision making in Horror is usually just stupid and tropey, but here these guys are explorers and probably some level of adrenaline junkie, so the decisions are sometimes dangerous but within their character realistically. Also I found a fan edit if it called the Catacombs Cut, I can't remember what is different about it and I haven't watched it yet but I think it includes a deleted scene or two. Maybe I will watch tonight.
>>219787484>>219789618I thought the first one was scary, but I guess I was 14 or 15 and hadn't really been into the genre. The second one was okay but everything after that was trash imo. And I really watched them all. Unless there has been a new one in like the last 5 years.

I worship Korne, and therefore find 'horror' to be a nuisance. I try to enjoy it, but something is always silly or totally irrational and it makes me not care anymore. There's things that are disturbing to watch (the execution in bone tomahawk for example) but gore porn and 'horror' are not that same thing. I've never seen or watched anything that made me want to turn off the screen.
The Girl Next Door (2007) was one of the most horrific films I've seen. I thought it was well done but would never watch it again
>>219793387>im fucked because I look at something that isn’t real and don’t react to it
>>219793573Oh come on, it wasn't that terrib-Oh sorry, you said 2007, my mistake
>>219779038Something about ghost photography always gets me. It's why Fatal Frame is my favorite video franchise and why I love watching found footage type movies, so this movie really scratched the perfect itch for me and I honestly can't think of many other movies with a jump scare that got me as good as that end scene. Say what you will about the acting or the story or the pace, but if nothing else that scene is a masterclass in building tension. And for that, Lake Mungo deserves the recognition it gets IMO.
>>219793573I watched it recently. The content is fucked up but the presentation is corny, like a made for TV movie. It does not have the same feel nowadays. Also more people know about Junko and Likens now, making this slightly less shocking because you have a heads up about the depths of the depravity you're about to witness.
