With missing teeth, most of his skull caved in and one eye missing, Homelander tearfully looks at his son and says, "This hurts me more than it hurts you. I'm... so sorry Ryan... had I procreated with someone stronger like Stormfront, even Firecracker... perhaps then you wouldn't have been born with such a weak heart, like your mother." With a smirk he adds, "She didn't put up much of a fight either.". Then with his last remaining ounce of strength, Ryan stares with his one raging eye at his father and hisses, "Burn in hell, you fucking CUNT!" with so much emphasis on the last word it would have made Butcher gleam with pride. Finally Homelanders eyes turn cold and empty, then burn bright red as he begins lasering directly into Ryan's face, for a long sustained blast that seems to last longer than it needs to. Homelander looks at what remains of his son: a headless corpse with a pile of smoldering flesh where Ryan's head once was. Homelander bursts into bitter Thanos tears and says, "I'm so sorry Ryan. So sorry you don't get to be a part of, my bright future." before he flies away, leaving Butcher to find Ryan's remains.This could have been a truly haunting depiction of brutality and paranoia, like the portrait of Jupiter devouring his own son. Ryan is a genuine threat who if armed with the virus, can kill Homelander. Instead, the actual scene just makes Homelander look like Omni-Man, a grumpy bitch who roughed up his superson then fucked off. Omni-Man is a redeemable character, Homelander isn't.

There are moments that almost shine, where they try and take the story seriously for a moment, but I just can't get that emotionally enveloped by it because those moments are always in close proximity to a gag where someone gets beaten to death with a 35 foot long cock for example. Not because they have to balance the comedy with drama, but because of the sheer volume of degenerate dick and shit humor; you are pretty much always within arms reach of its trademark le edgy humor, and that dampens the impact of the serious moments. For me, anyways. I wouldn't want them to remove all of their edgelord shit though because that would just be wiping basically its entire identity.
