Hackson ruined so many characters from the books. No wonder Tolkien junior hated the movies.
>>219782037The music and dialog carried the movies desu

>>219782037Sorry bro, didn't have time to flesh out the proud gonorians. Took too much screentime from Frodo.
>>219782417kys retardop is baiting but you can impale yourself
>>219782037The guy was 90 yo, he probably hated movies in general.
>>219782037Tolkien's son was a hypocritical sperg himself. He directly took out parts from the Silmarillion that his father put in, added his own writings, and until he day he died refused to reveal which passages exactly were added by him.
the problem is it feels too much like a 2000s Hollywood movie. even when they harp on in the DVD extras (which are great btw) about how faithful they want to be, blah blah blah.i totally understand elements like the production design being of its time. i think Gollum looks like shit (Jar Jar Binks looks great) and if you actually watch the Massive 3D 'actors', the films get waaay too much credit for 'using CGI sparingly'.however, the most glaring issue is the comedy. there are plenty of funny conversations in the books, but that's just the characters in natural dialogue. in the films, Merry and Pippin are MOVIE 'comic relief' characters, and there's all this slapstick nonsense where the editing leaves beats for the audience to laugh.also, they gave Aragorn some sexy 2000s scruff (literally not possible for his race) but they'd never DARE give him a glorious 1970s moustache like picrel.
>>219782037the new movies will flop no matter what you're trying to tear down something made of adamantine, it's just not going to work
>>219782037I'll starting giving a shit about Christopher's opinions as soon as he apologizes for publishing his dads private correspondences and unfinished work, that his dad very much didn't want published, to make a quick buck.
>>219783842>gloriousNow that sounds even more gay than moustache itselfBut again yes, the movies needed more songs...
>>219783683>He directly took out parts from the Silmarillion that his father put in, added his own writings, and until he day he died refused to reveal which passages exactly were added by him.damn, this irks me. obviously someone had to finish them, but Tolkien nerds can tell you the precise differences between PRINTINGS. if any manuscripts ever needed preserving/publishing just for archive autism, it would be Tolkien's.Roald Dahl fans, read this (or just scroll to the table):https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2023/02/17/roald-dahl-books-rewritten-offensive-matilda-witches-twits/you guys complaining that they made Aragorn a black dude on a Magic: The Gathering card: you have no idea how much worse things could possibly be.
>>219783991Thank goodness talk of Road Dahl has finally entered the discussion, as if anyone's ever even heard of him, much less gaf about his works!
>>219783934>Now that sounds even more gay than moustache itselfprobably why we didn't get Tom Bombadil tbqh.>the movies needed more songs...songs are also gay. look at what happened to Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd.have any singers/bands gotten the songs right, /tv/? i respect The Tolkien Ensemble, but none of their versions feel how they should:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypVbkcXRFys>There Is an Inn, a Merry Old Inn. >>219785242>A note was sent to Patricia Finney (Dec. 9/72), answering a question about beards, that mentioned some of the male characters which she and a friend did not imagine as having beards. I replied that I myself imagined Aragorn, Denethor, Imrahil, Boromir, Faramir as beardless. This, I said, I supposed not to be due to any custom of shaving, but a racial characteristic. None of the Eldar had any beards, and this was a general racial characteristic of all Elves in my "world". Any element of an Elvish strain in human ancestry was very dominant and lasting (receding only slowly — as might be seen in Númenóreans of royal descent, in the matter of longevity also). The tribes of Men from whom the Númenóreans were descended were normal, and hence the majority of them would have beards. But the royal house was half-elven, having two strains of Elvish race in their ancestry through Lüthien of Doriath (royal Sindarin) and Idril of Gondolin (royal Noldorin). The effects were long-lasting: e.g. in a tendency to a stature a little above the average, to a greater (though steadily decreasing) longevity, and probably most lastingly in beardlessness. Thus none of the Númenórean chieftains of descent from Elros (whether kings or not) would be bearded. It is stated that Elendil was descended from Silmarién, a royal princess. Hence Aragorn and all his ancestors were beardless.- J. R. R. Tolkien, Unfinished Talespls ignore Cirdan the Shipwright. Tolkien was a master world-builder who never made any mistakes, okay?
>>219786137>Tolkien was a master world-builder who never made any mistakes, okay?Tolkien constantly changed his mind on things. The best example is whether Men can learn magic or not.Initially the answer was supposed to be "no," then he looked back at his other writings and noticed how much "human magic" he'd already put into his writings, and then decided that "yes" but they have to learn it from scratch.
>>219786338that's because he was transcribing the Red Book of Westmarch and his pen slipped, okay??
>>219786488On the other hand, you have his son removing the "Dagor Dagorach" even from the Silmarillion even though his father put it in there, all the while giving some bullshit excuse. The probable actual reason was probably that Christopher was the proponent of the Arda = Ancient Earth version, while his father was more on the side of Arda = Alternative Earth.
>>219782037Faramir felt like a person in the movies. In the book he was just there to be a Mary Sue with no flaws(zero temptation to take the ring lol) and spout Tolkien's personal philosophies.
Faramir was a "practically perfect in every way" Gary Stu self insert for Tolkien in the books.Hackson and his 2 retarded co-writers fucked up a lot, but Faramir as written was a ridiculous character.
