I've been on a trip to Japan. I studied Japanese for a couple years, and a bit of Korean. I can still speak some Japanese, tell apart Korean, and Chinese (but not mandarin vs cantonese). Other Asian languages beyond that, I wouldn't be significantly better at recognising than a random system, maybe slightly more seeing the writing. Man's Inhumanity to Man is a cdrama about Unit 731 and they actually did have a couple japanese actors in there (nobody famous ofc, mostly just ones who were already working in China it seems), though a lot of the primary roles are just chinese actors speaking japanese. Some of them were actually pretty convincing however. The guy they got for Shiro Ishii was also in Pachinko for even more crossover
