>>219821885Thomas Pynchon eternally mogs Joyce. His books are better and more interesting, too. Joyce was more interested in showing off how smart he was, which made for dogshit plot and characters and increasingly trite novelty.

Knowing a fair amount about Irish culture and history, and history in general, and literature, and religion, and mythology, and language, and a bunch of other shit will help. It's a dense and often obscure novel. I like the Gabler edition, which comes with extensive notes that helps clarify and educate you about a lot of the content that may be obscure (a lot of it, its literature with a capital L).
