If you take all 9 movies in consideration, it's the story of family Palpatine. Sheev Palpatine is defeated by his grand daughter that joined the Jedi. The First Order is bigger than the Empire ever was, they built a bigger Death Star and actually destroyed several planets, killing quadrillions. Sheev's greatest feat was near the end of his life, when he deployed all ships aligned with him for one last battle. Also, he had a second in command called Darth Vader, him and his son kind of got in his the way in the middle of the story, they are side characters though.
