Did this age well? Would it still be considered "scary" by today's standards?
>>219826728American slop. Watch the original one.
>>219826799>:|>:O
>>219826728>oh no, a cute girl is coming out of my TV>this is horrible
>>219826728I showed it to my Gen Alpha cousins, and they both insisted it wasn't scary. I felt disheartened that something that traumatized me in my childhood could be seen as nothing to a younger generation.
>>219826799I have seen the original one and the American one is surprisingly better.
>>219826902They lied. The Grudge is definitely scarier than most horror movies that have come out since then.
>>219826799It's literally made by the same crew. Sam Raimi wanted to cash in after The Ring remake did so well so he flew some actors out to Japan and paid Shimizu to reshoot the movie Spanish Dracula-style for the American market. It's for all intents and purposes a Japanese film starring Hollywood actors and I'm pretty sure Shimizu himself admitted that it came out better since shooting the Japanese version first was like having a practice run.
Elevator scene is peak jump scare
>>219826900Please do not confuse Sadako with Kayako. Sadako comes out of TVs, Kayako comes out of your bed.
A remake that surprisingly wasn't shit.
>>219826902>insistedcool cool now go to their house and go into the basement and turn off the circuit breaker and see how tough they are
The part with the newspaper over the windows was great. It had a great sense of impending doom and anticipation. Every other part of the movie was just kind of mid.
>>219827990They both suck. The stairs scene in the japanese one is the only good thing in either of them.
>>219829057her hands must be so cold on her tummy haha what if she touched you this way
>>219829057NO NO PLEASE DON'T SUCK MY COCK ATTRACTIVE GHOST LADY AAAA I DON'T WANT TO FIX YOU AND SHOW YOU THE LOVE YOU MISSED OUT ON IN LIFE

>>219829815>>219830024Cute and wholesome
>>219826728This movie scared me more than The Ring as a teen
>>219826728Scared the fuck out of me the first time I saw it, and it held up pretty well when I watched it again a few years ago.One of the best horror films imo.
>>219826728legit one movie i regret watching as a kid since it traumatized me so much. and that's coming from someone who always thought the ring was gay and you were a pussy if it scared you
Yeah I'd say it has aged mostly well. Like the one anon said, The Grudge is still scarier than a lot of horror that has come out since then. It's also better than the Japanese original IMO.
this is the hottest picture on my computer and nothing is even close
>>219836377Sniff sniff
>>219826728the Japanese version is better. this may as well not exist.
THE ULTIMATE SHOWDOWN
>>219836806Who wins?
>>219826728Kayako is scary inherently because A. She doesn't operate on any logic, she operates solely on hatred and would likely kill thousands if she could. And B. The most important part, unlike most other horror villains, you cannot beat Kayako, there is no cheat to beat her she will win every time some idiot plays the game of tempting fate with her
>>219837548They had yuri sex and combined their curses to create the most powerful scary pale woman of the world: Sadakaya!
>>219837883Actually the scariest thing about her is she enjoys psychologically torturing you in really clever ways
>>219837548They merge into a singular entity named Sadakaya and there's the implication that because of Kayako's curse and Sadako's powers now combined that all life on Earth is doomed
>>219837883>you cannot beat KayakoShe's a ghost isn't she? There's plenty ways in Japanese Buddhism to trap and imprison evil spirits exactly like her
>>219837943Do they have a magical girl transformation sequence when it happens?
>>219837883>you cannot beat Kayako, there is no cheat to beat herYou find where her mortal body is buried, you dig up her grave, then you salt and burn her bones.
No, but that's because no movie is actually scary. It's just a movie
>>219826728Which Onryo would make the better sex slave?
>>219838082Sadako just wanted to be loved, so you take control of her, show her affection and she'll probably just kill people if you ask her to without question. Though given she's a ghost her womb is probably barren so no babies.Kayako would be a lot trickier because she doesn't really want anything except to see people die and torture them mentally for fun.
>>219837965>>219838061>>219837883I appreciate how Sadako is like the only horror villain who will happily, willingly spare someone if they follow her rulesI know someone will always want to fuck that up with an edgy sequel or whatever but it's very amusing to me how rare it is that a horror movie would have an antagonist that murders a shitload of people, but when a victim does the correct thing she just goes>Understandable, have a nice dayand leaves forever to torment someone else
>>219826728I watched it last month, it's alright. By no means a must see. I wouldn't consider it scary
Always felt bad for the girl in the original listening to the diskman, she had no idea.
>>219838345>who will happily, willingly spare someone if they follow her rulesBeyond don't watch her fucking video tape?
>>219838019
>>219838402She lets people go who watched the tape as long as they copy it and get someone else to watch it
>>219838345There's a reason why there's so much kawaii-type art and manga of Sadako, it's that Japanese audiences see her as far less evil than Kayako, despite the fact Sadako is a supernatural serial killer
>>219826728It was shit even back then. Released too close to The Ring which was scarier
>>219826728So, like, what happens when the person who watched the tape doesn't own a tv?
>>219838592As a viral video you just send it to someone else and that's what spares you from dying because you've done your part, there's literally a Ringu film with this exact premise
>>219838514They also view Godzilla as inherently not evil despite the fact the radioactive fucker destroys cities and kills people in his rampages.Japanese audiences of American slasher films also, ironically view Jason as a tragic character despite the fact he's got no reason to murder people but does anyway (he already killed his mother's killer, everything else is because he's a dick)
>>219838681>view Godzilla as inherently not evilHe's content to live in the sea, a theme of the more serious 80s & 90s movies was that his rampages are usually because he's hunting something or humanity has angered him and he's just dispensing his wrath for it, otherwise if we left him alone he'd probably never be seen by mankind
>>219838681Godzilla varies WILDLY from depiction to depiction on how evil he isThere are some movies where he'll pop a train open and eat its passengers like a jar of M&Ms, but there are others where he's certainly causing deaths and damage as he's thrown through buildings, yet he is 100% heroic because his only goal is killing something that wants to blow up the entire earth/genocide all life/etc.
>>219838681Jason Voorhees is the American SadakoIn his early incarnations as the weird hillbilly he was kind of an all-around asshole but the refined Zombie Jason is given a whole antihero code>don't go to Camp Crystal Lake>if you go to Camp Crystal Lake, don't smoke pot and have premarital sex there>also even when he's on a rampage he doesn't hurt small children>or dogs>or the elderly>what the fuck did you idiots just *steal* his machete?! his literal one treasured possession? okay everything that happens now is justifiedAnd by the time Freddy vs. Jason rolls around, even everyone in-universe seems to agree he's the platonic ideal of Lesser EvilFunny enough, I guess Kayako is closer to Michael Myers, where she's just that much of a cunt and she's making it everybody's problem
>>219838681>he's got no reason to murder people but does anywayHe's declared Camp Crystal Lake as his property, he's simply standing his ground Now Freddy, Freddy is a dick, he's just a sadistic evil bastard.Michael, at least the best depictions of him is that he simply kills because he's the will of evil made physical
>>219839009I was about to say Kayako is closer to Freddy Krueger since both very much enjoy psychological torture before the kill and are incredibly sadistic about it and it's clear both are quite creative about it. Difference is Freddy can be funny about it too
>>219839009>Kayako is closer to Michael MyersNot really, Kayako is a pissed off ghost who unleashes her wrath on the living because she's so consumed with rage, pain, and sadness that she's like a rabid, wounded animal.Michael Myers is pure evil made flesh, he has no reason to be an evil serial killer, he just is, he chose to murder people randomly because his only instincts are to do evil.
>>219839009Jason doesn't even need the machete, if he loses it he'll just substitute with something else or just use his hands
>>219839324>Jason doesn't even need the macheteHe doesn't need it but he wants it because it's the object Alice Hardy used to kill Pamela Voorhees. He clearly also does something supernatural to it since he cleaves through stuff that would break it no matter how strong he is, not to mention it'd rust away into nothing sitting in a lake for decades
So which J-Horror villain is closer to Hell Priest/Pinhead>Only shows up when summoned >Really only interested in dragging damnable souls to Hell >Evil but seems fixated on torturing the guilty and sinners mostly>Will kill you if you treat the powers of his summoning device like a toy >Can be bargained with
>>219828508It’s made by the same director, that’s why it’s good.
Kayako can do all sorts of crazy ghost shit while Sadakek who has psychic powers just goes directly for the kill once her part of the curse comes into play Why?
>>219829057so where's the cute girl again?
>>219840173Because Kayako is clearly the more well-written character, regardless of what others say as it pertains to The Ring vs The Grudge and which one is better overall. Only something specifically happening can trigger Sadako's arrival whereas Kayako can show up whenever she pleases. Sadako's laws are more strict, which by default limits the power she can only situationally unleash. Kayako, however, has total free reign. That (basically) makes her unstoppable.
Bump
>>219843199Fag
>>219841187Kayako's curse only starts when you step into her house, that makes the nature of her wrath just as situational as Sadako's, Kayako only has free reign to go and do as she pleases once her house was destroyed since that was the only thing keeping her contained
>>219837943>that all life on Earth is doomedJust seal up the well, build over it and just let her live there, forever. She may have both their powers but both can still be trapped, no reason this Sadakaya can't be too
You know how you beat evil spirits? You administer their last rites which nobody has ever thought to do with either of the Onryo, last rites in most traditions puts any spirit to rest regardless of how strong they are.
>>219830168But what if you had a really big tv???
>>219826728>Evil, murderous ghost?>Not a problem
>>219845088You get a very big Sadako, one that's eight feet tall
>Onryo get so many movies >Kuchisake-Onna got a movieWhen is my girl Hachisakusama getting a movie?
I wanna have sex with Kayako
>>219844561>Kayako only has free reign to go and do as she pleases once her house was destroyed since that was the only thing keeping her containedNot true. She chased the chick with the rabbit foot all the way to her apartment before the house had been burned down
>>219845912>When is Hachisakusama getting a movieShe already did, but it's spoilers that she's in it since she wasn't in the original 2ch creepy story the movie is based on.リゾートバイト
>>219847575>Not true. She chased the chick with the rabbit foot all the way to her apartmentNTA but wasn't that because as a ghost Kayako had to attach herself as part of her curse?
>>219847575Because stepping into Kayako's house activates the curse, that's before the house got burned
>>219845772Proof?
>>219847934Not sure what you mean? My point is just that it is not true that her house had to be burned for her to appear outside the house.>>219848100Maybe i misinterpreted what that anon said. Does he mean that after the house was burned down, she can chase whoever she wants regardless of whether they stepped into the house? I don't remember much apart from the first movie. Wasn't the house still there in the second movie where the school girls lock the girl in the closet?
>>219848239>Does he mean that after the house was burned down, she can chase whoever she wants regardless of whether they stepped into the house?Yes, the house was the only thing keeping her and her curse contained. Kayako's curse is like a virus, it spreads if not contained. With the containment destroyed she's free to go out and kill as many people as she wants
>>219826728any horror movie that has the victims hallucinate is inherently cheap and trash
>>219838461>don't stick your face in the Alien egg, get someone else to do itI don't think this is as rare as you think
>>219848217You get her big sister,Hachishakusama
>>219826728Who cares?
>>219826728It doesn't take forever to get to the point and doesn't pretend it's high art like the elevated horror meme trash, so no, if it came out today Reddit would hate it
>>219826728Reminder that the Ringu films omit that Sadako [spoilers]has testicles in her vagina
Best Ringu film? For me, it's 1995.Closest to the source material.
>>219851867The 1995 version is great, lots of gooner bait as well.
The way the 'net treats Sadako pisses me off. No she doesn't really come out of the TV, it's just a visual representation of the curse; so no she wouldn't be a little chibi if she came out of your phone, she'd either approach your screen and then teleport behind you, or she'd put her fingers through the screen and then teleport behind you after you dropped your phone. Also, Sadako is technically a boy; and the whole tragedy behind this is ignored by cumbrains. Also2 no you can't "save" Sadako, because what's left is not really Sadako, in the same way that Kayako is not Kayako but her family's rage and sadness rolled into a curse; Sadako wants to end the world, and unless you're an ESPer she's probably not going to be attracted/interested in you.Also3, the direct to TV Ju-on movie is better than the theatrical one.>>219836377>>219836615You do know you'd be smelling balls, right?>>219851867I like '95 and Rasen; I like Ringu's tape better; I hate 0, even if the spooky scenes at the end are cool, I just despise the retcon.>>219838345I haven't seen ALL the Ring movies, but so far they haven't broken the rule. It has evolved, but she still plays by the rules because 1. Ringu is a mystery / science fiction series2. It's a part of Sadako's motif (to reproduce and to instill slow fear and pain onto people (basically how she felt in life and in the well))Now Samara on the other hand, just goes full WesternSlop in the sequel. Basically ditches the series premise and goes off the rails, with at best some connection to the Ringu 2 movie, which was already a departure from the series.>>219838592She'll just appear, maybe through a mirror/reflection to fuck with you.
>>219826728I find this entertaining. To me the original had a better acting, but the remake had much better production. If they had been combined, it could be considered one of the all-time greats. As it is, they're both really great, but not elite.
>>219853756Are you talking about the direct to video Japanese movie and the Theatrical Japanese movie? Are you talking about the Theatrical Japanese movie and the American 2004 movie? Or are you talking about the 2004 and 2020 American movies?
the original does, for sure
