Yeah it's a weird film. It's part White savior but not really. It's respectful of Jap culture but still lets Tom dick down some good looking gook. IMO it's the jews telling the japs that your culture no longer exists. As if the bombs weren't enough.

Why strange? There are so many stories like It that it's a common trope and the character could even be an archetype, the outsider that goes native. Typical romantic story of the noble savage. Dances with wolves, avatar, dune, the last of the mohicans...
