Here's the top-rated review of all time for Ingmar Bergman's landmark 1957 film, "The Seventh Seal".

Get it? Pretty clever!
>>
>>219828911
It's disgusting
>>
>>219828958
It was decent at the beginning, for movie lovers. Now it's made for memes.

Any website designed for mobile will have the lowest IQ people imaginable. It's pretty obvious smartphones ruined the internet by giving people 24/7 access and lowering the barrier to entry to nothing.

>>219828911
Yeah. I watched Ravenous 1999 (an absolute kino gem) and I looked at the reviews and they were all like
>Oh my god these dudes were about to fuck!
>I could feel them wanting to cream each others hairy shitholes every moment!
Like what?? Also generation kill or any other military drama is like that too with the reviews on that website
>>

The reviews are just people trying to get likes

The top pulp fiction review is someone calling the film homoerotic

Two male characters being friends (or enemies) means they're gay. Also any attractive female character is exclusively for lesbians and gays. Also a male director putting rape in his film is his personal endorsement of rape.

Protip: If you block someone it removes all their reviews and lists from displaying. There's really only a couple dozen people who post useless shit like that on a bunch of movies so it wont take long to remove them the vast majority.
Although a better tip is never read the review section in the first place, why the fuck do you wanna know what these dumb cunts think of a movie?
>>
>>219830178
Yeah I just follow a few people from here & irl, much better than going to the review section.
It's insane that they banned Stav of all people. With that & their standards for what counts as a film, the site is ran quite poorly. Like they allow straight up porn but will randomly remove things like the gothic king cobra documentary
>>
>>219830178
>never read the review section in the first place, why the fuck do you wanna know what these dumb cunts think of a movie?
Wow, it's almost as if a major point of the website is reviews, how come people would want to read good reviews??? That's crazy bro!!!!
>>
>>219831521
Letterboxd is only good for keeping a digital diary of the movies you’ve seen the reviews are dogshit and rarely informing
>>

>Was the site always this bad or did tumblr and twitter overtake it?
it was a nice change of pace compared to IMDB. Niche, users were more serious about movies, better reviews, social media aspects were decent and created new ways to discover movies.
Then a funny review went viral and it was over. Now its 90% people trying to make the funniest 3 line review
Still ok if you curate the fuck out of it, find some active users who share your tastes and follow them and ignore the rest.

But yeah the userbase is way worse
>>
>>219832021
rym's userbase has enshittified terrifically over the past few years but you can still find plenty of good users from before troons infested the mainpage culture. aoty on the other hand is just comprised of entry level hipsters who think they are out there when in reality they just listen to radiohead and kendrick like everyother fagtano dr0ne. rym's film section is still pretty lowkey and again you can find plenty of good users from looking at more obscure films and their raters
>>
>ITT /tv/ posters acting elitist snobs when they think they’re better than your average letterboxd user

Mostly shitty but people make it that way on purpose.
Rebbit is shitty just because how the userbase naturally is.
Kiwifarms is the only place I've heard genuine conversation online that didn't immediately turn into people calling each other nigger. It happens but it's not a hair trigger reaction. But not to say it doesn't have it's problems.

Has nothing to do with free speech

Go back, troon
>>

Absolutely the worst for movie reviews, yes. IMDB Forums at their lowest were never this bad.

>>219828958
I remember years ago there was a starter pack meme that would float around that specified the 4 or 5 accounts that you have to block on day one. But now it’s like every account is one of those. Not sure quite when the change happened but I felt like there was a significant drop off in quality when they decided Squid Game was eligible to be logged on their movie app.

Anyway, picrel should explain a lot about the watch habits of the average user.

Letterboxd is good in that it is less indian and boomer than IMDB, whether or not the popular reviews are insufferable and ironic does not matter a great deal to me, I don't worship the site, nor am I invested in its community, I just know as a matter of that that it is a better tool for finding good movies than IMDB is.

The Wizard of Oz has 136k reviews
How to Train Your Dragon (2025) has 381k and scores on par with Suspiria

Considering the general consensus is that 3.5/5 is the average ‘Good’ movie score:
>The Mask, Chasing Amy, The Suicide Squad, Tron, Hard Target, The Naked Gun, Malignant
All miss the mark based on reviews, even Pacific Rim just made the cut. Hardly pretentious picks. It’s just that the userbase is allergic to almost anything pre-2010.
>>
>>219833955
>Why are most people watching new movies instead of stuff that is 80 years old?!??!

Because that is how most operate, dummy. We don’t live in a world that appreciates old films. Most people only care about new things because everyone else is watching and talking about them. Look at this fucking board, it’s nonstop talking about new movies and shows and whining about how relatively new movie “ruined” a decades old franchise
>>
>>219834031
If it was any other old movie I’d agree but The Wizard of Oz? Who tf hasn’t watched The Wizard of Oz?
>>
>>219834085
I know people who were in their thirties and hadn’t seen any of the star wars movies. And some people don’t rate films on letterboxd because it’s been so long they saw something that they don’t remember how they feel about it
>>
>>219834085
No one cares about Wizard of Oz outside the US
>>
>>219833131
Down syndrome tier post. If you block someone on letterboxd, everyone else can still read their posts. That's not suppressing anyone's free speech. By that same logic you're against free speech if you refuse to buy the New York Times every day.
>>
I'm usually not a snob but we do need to come back to times when you had to prove you actually know a lot about cinema and are capable writer to be a movie reviewer.

>>219833691
Indian men are so easy to manipulate
>>
It's a good website to catalogue your movies and watch list but the reviews are terrible as all the top reviewers just want to reduce every movie into a dumb meme
>>
>>219834278
Better yet, we need to come back to times when any kind of participation in public discourse was a priveledge for the select few, such as myself.
>>
>>219828911
>Is Letterboxd the worst website ever made?
Hell no. But it is pretty bad. It seems to have attracted all the worst secondaries from tumblr and twitter and there's basically been no growth in users in raw numbers who rate or write thoughtfully. It's all ironic shitposting for updoots mostly from people who didn't actually watch the movie themselves and are just copying takes other people have made. It's pretty fucking terrible.

Letterboxd is media for women
That's why all the highest rated movies on the website are romcom slop and why every review is about roasties making sex jokes about how they want to fuck this actor
And why every movie made for men has reviews with women saying it's an incel propaganda

It's not a website for men even though 4chan is the reason why letterboxd got popular

>>219834663
Again, that doesn’t mean ALL old high rated movies are Japanese. Wait & See, 12 Angry Men, Godfather part 2, Cinema Paradiso, Shawshank Redemption, the Good the Bad and the Ugly are there too. The fact that Kurosawa and Kobayashi have some of the best rated films has nothing to do with “muh wacism” or “waaah they hate white people”. It’s because they’re legitimately some of cinema history’s greatest masterpieces and so many people keep recommending them so it drives more people to see them and they’re so universal in appeal people love them.

It seems you have completely misunderstood the concept of free speech. It doesn't mean that you're obligated to consume everyone else's speech, just that you're not impeding them from expressing themselves. Again, you are not suppressing people's ability to express themselves by blocking them. It's the difference between
>You're not allowed to say that.
and
>I am not going to listen to you.

>>
>>219834978
You fundamentally don’t value free speech and instead demand a safe space for your sensitive eyeballs when you keep complaining that you have to go out of your way to block seeing old passive posts when browsing reviews. Nobody was arguing about suppression, it’s about the inherent fragility of people who bitch about how they can’t say anything anymore and then act like thin skinned bitches themselves when they cry that a platform is ruined when too many people don’t think in the way they approve of. Your “appreciation” of free speech is only about wanting to exist in a bubble where you see no push back and never face any form of consequences for your speech no matter how much you act like an asshole
>>
>>219828958
Like most things it's popularity killed it's heat. Once the normies find out about something they instantly start shitting it up. It's basically like when a good spot gets ruined by tourists.

But it didn't. People who say this were never active on imdb to begin with.

Are you trying to imply so-called "millenial writing" is anything but trash?
>>

way better than /tv/

I love this film and hate this kind of parasexual interpretation in general (e.g. Frodo&Sam), but you're deluding yourself if you think Ravenous isn't more than a little homoerotic

Have you tried just not reading the "reviews"? The site works perfectly fine for logging and rating movies. There's no need following other people than your friends.

There are three types of popular reviews on Letterboxd:

1. Some incredibly lame attempt at a joke
2. Long political rambling about how problematic the movie is
3. "This character is gay"

>>
>>219836333
>I wonder what they think about immigration policy for instance and I can’t stop thinking about that

>>
>>219828911
I like using Letterboxd for logging and rating the movies I watch. The watchlist is a good feature too. I rarely ever look at the reviews, but they're no worse than /tv/. Both are obnoxious and predictable in what they'll praise and what they'll hate about movies. One thing Letterboxd has over /tv/ is that users there do actually watch the movies they post about.
What I really miss is message boards. We need something like the IMDB forums back. There is no where good to discuss movies on the internet.

Make a good thread and people will discuss it with you.

Lol just look at this one. All the top comments are thirsting over Robert De Niro and the rest are crying about Elia Kazan ratting out people to the HUAC (yeah I get it, but you need to get over it sweetie, also the man was one of the biggest kino machines in history). I just find it hilarious this relatively obscure 70s film is still infested with this shit.

>Make a good thread and people will discuss it with you.
It's very hit or miss for good threads to actually get traction on here. Most get just a handful of replies and die. And good luck discussing newer releases on here unless it's a major blockbuster because /tv/ anons are poor shut ins that don't leave the house.

>>219839431
I don't follow anyone on there. I've never really gotten the social media aspect of the site.

I dare anyone to read the top review of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
>>
>>219839707
Interesting language usage.
>it's all set carefully to make me
As if the movie from 41 years ago had trannies in mind at any point, even remotely by a single soul, during its production. It's the movie's fault, it's a designed jab at them personally, and all trannies. It was crafted to give them gender discomfort. Nothing at all is wrong on their end, it's the movie attacking them.

"Sally" is so close to a breakthrough, here, but instead it seems the victim mindset (and possibly sunk cost fallacy) has one yet again. The self-inflicted torture, misdiagnosed, continues.

I’m a Bong and would say Wizard of Oz is definitely a cultural landmark. It’s maybe slightly less popular than Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (Wilder version) these days with younger people but it’s definitely still a staple.
