For the first part it was obvious that the entire point was to see who would use the table in the middle of the room to lean on. This is made very clear by the cinematography showing all the other candidates struggling to set their paper against anything and breaking their pencil lead in the attempt. I doubt Will's paper was ever even looked at, that wasn't the point. For the shooting bit, while I don't think the point was to shoot the girl, I DO think the point was NOT to shoot the aliens just because they are aliens, this would be an important mindset to see a potential candidate has. Will shown he thinks very differently to everyone else so he was selected, because he's clearly made of stuff that can handle what MiB will teach him, whereas the others get neuron zapped and dismissed.
