People ON THIS VERY BOARD tried to convince me not to watch this absolute cinema because there's a few lines you might be able to call "Reddit"
I almost let them convince me, but they were showing it at a small local theatre rather than the 2 hours I usually have to drive for movies so I took the chance and I'm glad I did

But the thing that made me watch it was actually the box office numbers. No matter the amount of shilling you do on an Azerbaijan goat milking forum, it won't translate to 500 million dollars worldwide. It's doing really well for a movie released during the non-summer season, especially since most people just wait for streaming these days. There's real interest in it because it's a well-made movie with universal appeal; it's a story about a great friendship in a unique setting.

It was honestly so nice to watch a modern bluckbuster that was very very good. That's was one of the best things I took away from it, that it's still possible to make kino.
The Reddit thing is almost palpable but it barely detracts from the quality of everything else. Doesn't help that the movie has aggressively marketed itself as more quipslop.

I don't know what this "sunlight" thing is you're referring to, (is it anything like that "grass" stuff people are always going on about?), but it was worth watching DESPITE minor plebbitry. It's not the Second Coming of Christ though either.

If you like something different, comfy feels, and don't mind a slow film, it's actually pretty tolerable. You don't need to rush to the cinema though, so your shillery has failed your highness. I am a Jedi, like my father.

Does it mark some kind of turning point from the usual slop, (which is why a lot of people are interested in how this film does at the box office), well ... yes and no.

This is where it gets too complicated for retards. Like how idiots don't understand that while you may never have Christopher Reeve Superman again, that doesn't mean that you can't have it it another form. People like that shit on a fundamental level, but there are 21st Century issues a modern Superman has to deal with. That doesn't mean you go the opposite direction into cynicism and Nolan up-its-own-arse-serious depressing grimdark or other forms of equal and opposite faggotry. James Gunn is a retard and he thinks he can just do some bland middle-of-the-road slop, which is ironically boring for similar reasons that trying to be 'inoffensive' makes shit lame and gay.

Hail Mary is unapologetically what it is and leans in hard, without trying to be too performatively a 'muh science' film and that's what makes it good. The difference between old skool Star Trek, (unapologetic Space Cadet shit), and modern non-Trek, (performative 'I love science' garbage). The difference is exemplified by the phrase, "That's the power of math people!" In contrast to old skool technobabble actually based in some way on actual science, and dramatised appropriately, "I canna change the laws of physics Captain!"

Hail Mary is just an unusual kinda interesting and optimistic First Contact scenario where everything goes WAY better than expected.

Whenever a watchable torrent comes out for any decent movie people start hating on it on/tv/.
Same every time.

PHM was supreme kino, it's a long movie but never felt like it, in fact it should've been a bit longer to flesh out stuff like the astrophage propulsion tech.

Simplistic idea of how the art of movie making works.

It's like saying all the effects look good in a Marvel movie so it must be good, while I still have people complaining about the timing of the odd quip ruining the film for them still ringing in my ears.

Sure you can have a good written story, a good script, a good stage play, a good animation, but movies are working in more dimensions and can fail in them too. There are plenty of good stories/scripts that get fucked by bad directors, bad acting, bad production in general.

PHM (the movie) has literally only one thing going for it, Ryan Gosling.
Everything else is no different from dozens of other modern scifi slop we've seen. The Martian, 3 Body Problem (has portrayed by Netflix) etc.
Suffers from the same non-serious approach to space, that missions are completed by [main character] and not a carefully planned collaborative effort, same shallow emotional notes in an attempt to manipulate the audience, etc.
This is just Armageddon for zoomers instead of boomers.

So The Martian, a movie(and book) explicitly about a massive international effort to send the Mars ship and crew back to the planet to rescue Watney, which devotes significant amount of time to showing NASA's part including everything from PR management to random computer science guys, that film/book, fails to live up to your standard for a carefully planned collabourative effort?

Have you considered that they aren't bad films with "shallow emotional notes", but rather you're just an anhedonic autist incapable of relating to other human beings? What am I saying, of course you're not considering that, you're a subnormal retard incapable of self-reflection.

>>
>>219838462
There are some aspects of The Martian that are ok, but doesn't make up for the glaring flaws and lack of realism.
And yes lack of collaborative effort because the overall message seeks to aggrandize the individual, which is dishonest at its core.
A more realistic movie would be one where Matt Damon's character is barely hanging on and about to die, and the main characters are actually the people on earth who are working out the logistics to rescue him.
This stuff is harmful irl too, especially when it translates to stuff like war. It's like a war movie where one soldier solos enemies. It misrepresents war just like it misrepresents space.
Meanwhile irl war is like this:

It's a good film. Massively overrated.
The dialogue was painful at times. No character can speak normally. Every line has to be a quip or ironic sarcastic commentary.
Also don't quite get how the ship was able to travel 11 light years in only 4 years without going ftl but I'm probably thinking about this more than the writers did

There's a part in the book where he specifically ignores NASA advice because he dislike taking orders from "Bureaucrats". It's very much individualistic. The only issues the ground control solves are the ones that are completely out of his control.

PHM was one of the most beautiful movies I've seen in recent years. It made me think "oh my god, I forgot how good movies can look when they're trying". It was the antidote I needed to all the grey washed out shakycam stuff you see in low-budget streaming thrillers and even some expensive popular movies. That alone was enough to make me want it to be very successful.

Never thought about that, but not really.
It's three counting tau ceti
The astrophage doesn't actually destroy the star, it only eats/decreases sunlight by 10% at most, that may not seem like much but it will still destroy civilisations and ecosystems
The other stars may not even have life on them, the book hints that it's possible but makes no mention of them or even that they may be fucked.
You are right about it not being a happy ending though, except for Rocky I suppose. Human civilisation is still fucked for decades even if the sun is saved
