>Avatar gets new movie
>Toph's 30 year old voice actor gets replaced with a 50 year old woman because MAH DIVERSITY
Thread about the movie I guess. Obviously the synopsis is impossible to find since the movie leaked and isn't officially out, but can someone who's watched this probably slop confirm if it's preachy dogshit full of revisionism and character assasination, like Korra and the live action?

Did you complain when kid Goku's voice actress got replaced by a dude to voice adult Goku too?
>>
It's the equivalent of a an anime filler movie. Well animated but inconsequential, plot wise. Recasting the actors was stupid, and they made a new female avatar look loke a tranny
>>
>>219843798
>Did you complain when kid Goku's voice actress got replaced by a dude to voice adult Goku too?
She didn't.
Also the original actress is now an adult too. The new actress is an elderly woman.

A voice actor is not the character and they're not meant to be cast as them forever, that's Japanese retardation.

>A voice actor is not the character and they're not meant to be cast as them forever
Yeah, sometimes they get older, so you have to replace them with someone twice their age.

Okay, let's go.
>Aangis is searching for a staff that can turn non-benders into airbenders
>He randomly encounters a powerful airbender frozen in ice and frees him
>The airbender joins the gang in the travel to find the staff
>Airbender then tricks Aang into giving him the staff
>And reveals he is actually and wants to kill all non-airbenders and form a new Air Nation
>Aang then decides to just break the staff
>Breaking the staff resets everything and kills the evil airbender
That's literally the entire movie. Toph, Zuko, Kata, and Sokka hang around but don't really do anything.
>>
>>219844010
aang kills him?
>>
>>219844042
Technically.
He is an ancient airbender who was corrupted and kept alive by the spirit energy.
So, he is alive by the staff.
When Aang breaks the staff, he turns into dust.

The preachiness was basically a reinforcement of the air benders' pacifist stance that got them eradicated in the first place - "if you beat your enemy, he wins". The characters were distilled versions of their anime counterparts, which is all that could be expected from a 90-minute, stand-alone piece of content. The voice acting was shit. The animation had a few rough points, but was ultimately good. Nothing was offensive aside from trying to push the idea that cultural and ethnic suicide is actually a good thing, though I suppose that's offensive enough. It did at least have best girl.

Movie is just under 1:30, but it's impressive how little manages to happen.
It feels like they stretched a 20 minute filler episode out.
And then you make a big deal about replacing all the VAs, but Aang and Air Guy do 90% of the talking anyway.
And of course it was directed by a woman

That was total fucking garbage. I have no idea what they were thinking. The backlash against the writing of Korra was so bad and they're seriously like "what if we just re-did Korra but with Aang?"

>Republic City
>Equalists
>canonize Wan
>canonize spirit world as a physical place
>bad guy airbender
>airbending magically comes back
>bad guy infused with spirit world energy fights good guy infused with spirit world energy

None of the characters felt like themselves except a couple of Sokka lines
It doesn't even make sense that in Korra's time no one talks about the time a floating temple fell out of the sky and landed on Republic City and the avatar fought a glowing demon.
And then the fucking ending where Aang has a group of followers who he wants to preserve air nomad culture with, when we know that by Korra's time the only people who preserve air nomad culture

There's a whole scene where for no reason at all Taika Waititi gets to guest VA a boar spirit with 6 eyes and act wacky for a few mins before swallowing up the Gaang and spitting them out at the location of the final battle.
I didn't even recognize him by voice, I just immediately knew he wasn't a pro VA and that this had to be a guest spot, and it was.

Not only that, but the staff was made by an avatar 5000 years ago by asking the Lion Turtles how they gave the first benders their power, and several references to that avatar Wan retcon are made as the gaang travel to a Lion Turtle graveyard to find the staff
>>
>>219843681
The staff should be a living creature like a spirit tree sapling.

Equalist plots should be nuked because they don't fit the setting at all. A bender cannot be sure their child will be a bender and two non-benders can make Toph.

Fully synopsis given to me by a friend:
>Aang is collecting air nomad relics when he finds a statuette of someone named "Sonam". Immediately a gang of non-benders calling themselves The Denied attack him and steal the map inside the statuette
>Aang talks to previous avatars to try and find out who Sonam is. He finds a wacky old avatar who says Sonam is the "lost avatar" because no one can talk to her in their past lives. She had a magic staff that could make airbenders. The wacky avatar tells Aang to travel to a specific mountain to find her.
>Aang leaves in the night and tells Katara in a note to gather the Gaang (except Suki). We get a brief scene of what each of them is up to.
>On top of the mountain he finds someone frozen in ice just like he was and he breaks them out. It turns out to be a powerful airbender who saves Aang as the mountain falls apart. The Gaang arrive on Appa last minute
>Together in an airship they all travel to a place in the sea surrounded by an eternal storm. On the way the airbender explains that 5000 years ago he was a disciple of Sonam, who gave him airbending, and together airbenders went around the world bringing peace to the other nations.
>During a fight with The Denied, the airbender almost crushes their airship and has to be stopped by Aang. The airbender and Aang have to work together to break through the eternal storm and find islands made from the bones of lionturtles. Aang insists on going alone to find the staff and leaves the Gaang to fix their ship
>The airbender turns evil, crushes their ship and is implied to have killed the entire Gaang in a 1v4 fight where he is shown to have insane speed and strength.
>he finds Aang and pretty much immediately says that he killed the Gaang because Aang would always put the other nations before his own. He defeats Aang and takes the staff, flying away on Appa and encountering The Denied who he offers the power of airbending

Airbender antagonist had potential. But hurt Airbender, who just wants to kill everyone for revenge, is just boring as fuck.
Movie pretenders, there is some ideological temptation, but there just isn't.
He essentially says:
>"Hey Aang, I want to rebuild Air Nomads too. How about we start with killing everyone else?"
The temptation just isn't meaningful because Aang clearly isn't something Aang would consider.
More challenging villain motivation would challenge Aang's worldview
>>
Was this scene really necessary?
>>
>>219847638
>While unconscious Aang talks to avatar Sonam and finds out that many airbenders died in a war with the earth kingdom and this caused the bad guy airbender to view all non-benders as the enemy. He stole the staff and used it to merge with the spirit world, forcing Sonam to lock him away in the mountain because she couldn't defeat him
>Aang awakens to find that he and the Gaang are all somehow in an underground cave full of spirit water exactly like the Korra Wan arc, and Katara apparently healed them all
>Stranded on the lionturtle islands Aang summons the ocean spirit from season 1 of AtLA and they jump into its mouth which takes them to the spirit world.
>for no reason at all, Katara and Zuko turn old, Aang and Sokka are their young selves, and Toph is a baby. Aang says this is because the spirit world is "out of balance" but it doesn't affect anything
>They meet Taika Waititi who is a boar spirit that helps them get to a temple in the sky where the bad airbender is going to merge with spirit energy again
>Aang is unable to stop him and he looks a lot like the Dark Avatar as he pulls the temple into the real world over Republic City
>The Denied are all master airbenders and fight the Gaang while Aang fends off the bad guy airbender
>Aang eventually takes the staff and fuses with the spirit world himself
>He is close to killing the bad guy when he has a vision of Gyatso that tells him his people will always be with him
>he breaks the staff and the bad guy seems forgiven as he turns to blue ash and gets sucked away with the temple in the sky
>The Denied all lose their bending
>the movie ends with an air temple being built outside Republic City, and Aang taking non-benders dressed as air nomads to go find air nomad relics, they then discover a herd of sky bison
>>
>>219847746
I think it would have instantly been more interesting if it was a female airbender and Aang had to seriously consider if he leaves Katara to go repopulate the air nomads. But I guess they don't really want to refer to sex in the series

I know none of us have seen it because we're all very well behaved and are waiting to pay Paramount+ for the official release, but I have heard from a reliable source that you're both fucking wrong.
He very fucking explicitly says that HE watched their people turned to ash and "where were you?"
He does say that the air nomads were peace keepers around the world, but his backstory is very clear that in his time it was the earth nation that they were at war with. He says it when he first wakes up and freaks out that Toph is an earthbender, and when Sonam is giving Aang an exposition flashback we rather comedically see airbenders getting squished by slabs of earth, no other elements involved

It's blatantly an old draft of the script where he was going to be from Aang's time somehow

>He stole the staff and used it to merge with the spirit world, forcing Sonam to lock him away in the mountain because she couldn't defeat him

Before you know he's evil, the way he tells it is that he and Sonam fought side by side and got pushed back to the mountain, and Aang interjects that she must have frozen him to save him.
When Sonam tells the story, she couldn't beat him because he was full of spirit world energy so she locked him away

Zuko is irrelevant in this movie; they could have just not bothered.
He should probably not have come either way, because as the movie highlights, he has literally a nation to run. Zuko's only contribution to the story is he brings an airship.
Would have been a more natural decision to take Suki (who only makes a cameo in the credits stills). Flirting between Suki and Sokka would have given the film more energy.
>>
>>219852664
>Besides being intrinsically annoying, are you suggesting a professional faggot would have done a better job at this unnecessary character?
>If so, please explain to my pleb mind how you noticed he wasn't professional.
It's two things really.
Firstly, it's really fucking late in the movie to be introducing a character with that many lines. He probably had more lines than the fucking Denied gang combined. So that raises eyebrows to begin with, but hey, a pro VA could have a guest spot and get similar treatment.
The second thing that nails it is he doesn't sound right for the character. He sounds like a dad doing a silly character for his kids. Which means either he was cast for his name and not his suitability for the role, and/or he doesn't really know how to act in a voice that isn't his own. You can listen to compilations of pro VAs and all the characters they've voice, and holy fucking shit a lot of the time you wouldn't even know it's the same person. So when you have a big boar monster thing and he just sounds like some guy, it's probably someone who is not used to voice acting
>>
>>219852839
VAs aren't going to know until the movie is done and on screens. They get given pages and pages to read, sometimes there's rewrites and re-records, the script might be longer than the final product because they want to record coverage or make editing decisions later in the process.
0 chance they noticed during recording.
>"your character survived the air nomad genocide"
>okay, record lines
>"there's been a rewrite, your character is from 5000 years ago now"
>okay, record lines
>earlier version ends up in 1 scene
>>
>>219847764
I've had this dream
>>
>>219852752
Zuko could never lightning-bend even in Korra, so they weren't likely to change that. They spent most of the movie canonizing Korra trash, although that does make it a little ironic that no one ever talks about the time a blue demon man made a temple appear in the sky over republic city in korra's time. You'd think it'd come up sometime.
But other than that >>219852794 and >>219853656 are right.

If you're watching it to feel nostalgic about these character's, don't. They might as well not be the same people. There's like 3 times the characters felt like themselves
>we see what sokka is up to, inventing in the southern water tribe. Some kids question why the avatar would have travelled with a non-bender and sokka recaps some of his escapades with literal Jojos style art talking about what a chad he is
>we see what zuko is up to, and during a meeting a messenger reads a letter from aang that begins with "flameo hotman" expresses his hope that "the boring chancellor" who happens to be in the room isn't getting zuko down, and that they're going on an adventure and zuko should bring snacks
>while their airship is damaged by tornadoes, the benders of the group go to use their abilities to save them from crashing. When sokka asks what he should do, zuko tells him to take the wheel and sokka says something like "but I've only ever crashed fire nation airships, i don't know how to fly them"

That's it. That's the 3 times they characters at all feel like themselves
>>
>>219853656
they wanted to show off his new design
tho the whole movie could've just been about aang (and maybe katara since he revives him, but aang shouldnt have been able to tap onto his avatar state after being killed. oh well, yet another continuity error) following his airbender ancestor like a pet then beating him with the avatar state instant win button once he made his scooby doo villain reveal.

But I dont think an aang solo movie would have sold well, not that shipping this to a Paramount suscription was the best idea even without the leaks.
>>
>>219853009
