Doctor Who!
Peter Capaldi is the most overrated Doctor.
>>219858784bong slop
Peter Capaldi is the most underrated Doctor.
>>219858846Don't you have a new episode of The Boys to watch, Chet?
>>219858784>Jodie Whittaker: The Doctor who broke the rulesRules like "the show should be good" and "the main character shouldn't be terrible" or "the writing shouldn't be absolute dogshit". So brave>>219858874He was the best possible casting for the role but the water had been poisened by years of "the doctor should be a heartthrob for the young female audience"; he was fucking wasted int eh role and it sstill makes me angry that Moffat just gave him the same old shit
>>219858874>Paul McGann is the most underrated Doctor.ftfy

>>219860249He was renamed to "The Patient" due to his constant visits to the proctologist.

>>219858840Nah. Jon Pertwee and David Tennant. Especially David Tennant.
>>219858784The first black version of The Doctor was a flaming homosexual. Was it racism? Intentional sabotage? A humiliation ritual?
im a newfag getting into doctor who. reddit keeps telling me to start with christopher eccleston but episode one fucking sucks. is this going to get better or am i wasting my time.
>>219858896BIGENERATION?!!! OH LAWDY LAAWWWWD
>>219861493>bongs unironically watch this shit
>>219861549Depends on your tastes. Every era is kind of it's own thingYou could try watching some of the 60's and 70's stuff, and see if that grabs you better, or just jump forward to Matt Smith. If you want to watch the most quintessential episode of Doctor Who it's either the Daleks with Hartnell, or Genesis of the Daleks with Baker.
>>219861461Capaldi is the poser's choice for their favourite revival Doctor. He's okay as a Doctor, but his era of the show sucked.
>>219861611You can say that about basically every era. Especially David Tennant. Tennant legitimately has like three episodes he doesn't ruin with his manic over acting, or that Russel doesn't ruin by going full retard.
>>219861630With Tennant I at least liked more of the episodes in his era than I did with Capaldi where I liked more of his Series 8 stuff but Series 9 and 10 are generally very weak with the couple of notable exceptions.
>>219861672Yeah but with Capaldi, when it works, it works. With Tennant the best you ever get is a good episode where they effectively manage to restrain David Tennant from being David Tennant. Blink, Human Nature, Midnight. What do these have in common? The Doctor is either hardly in them, or hardly the Doctor.
>>219861724With Capaldi it's like getting a glimmer of something good in a pile of shit. He's bogged down by nearly everything else around him, and I don't think you can separate a Doctor from his era. Especially one that doesn't really have anything outside of his TV appearances. Every Doctor has their shit episodes, but chances are if you forced me to watch through a random Tennant series and a random Capaldi series I'd enjoy Tennant's more despite some of the shit episodes he had. A Doctor that mainly works in a best of compilation like Capaldi to get all of his great moments without the tedium in-between doesn't deserve all of the acclaim.
>existential puppet musicals
>try nuWho a few times>can't get into it whatsoever>try classic>absolute gigakino for the most partThere's something about the presentation of nuWho that bugs the shite out of me. Even with great actors like Eccleston and Capaldi in the role, there's something that seems to drag the experience down. I never get that feeling with the classic stuff, even with the dodgy effects. Also, Morgus is based.
>>219861941I think what happened is in the time between the early 80's and the reboot, Doctor Who came to be regarded as a campy franchise, and that perception of the franchise was intentionally baked in when they brought it back. Things like the idea that the aliens are supposed to look funny, or the way the writing will kind of wink at the audience and make fun of it's own conventions. That stuff wasn't there in the original series (at least until the 80's). They were genuinely just trying to make a good science fiction show. You also have the aspect of fanboyism seeping into the writing. Writers like RTD and Moffat writing the Doctor as what percieve him as in their imaginations, which is the greatest hero of all time. Go back to the original series, and he's not that. That's just not the character. He's basically an anti-hero who wants to joyride around the universe and sight-see, and he keeps getting roped into adventures. There's a repeated motif in the original series of him running away, abandoning his friends (once they're in relative safety), or trying to shrug out of duties that have been assigned to him. Modern Doctors never do shit like that.
>>219858840That's Tennant.
>>219862087>I think what happened is in the time between the early 80's and the reboot, Doctor Who came to be regarded as a campy franchise, and that perception of the franchise was intentionally baked in when they brought it back.Exactly this. Branding the show as a "kids/family friendly" show has done so much harm to the sense of storytelling.>There's a repeated motif in the original series of him running away, abandoning his friends (once they're in relative safety), or trying to shrug out of duties that have been assigned to him. Modern Doctors never do shit like that. The funniest part is, that's one of the few things that's been consistent between the old and modern eras, only the context has changed. Nowadays everything he does is for the greater good, even when it's alluded to being selfish.
>>219858905Moffat gave him the best episode of the entire show.
>>219861549You wont like the Slitheen episodes where there is more toilet humour.
>>219861611Capaldi's era is the best of the entire show.
>>219861941You're just a grandpa, classic who is mostly slow and padded.
>>219861569Why does he have to have that hair?
>>219863238not like in the old series. The new series will have the Doctor grapple with the morality of what he does to his companions' lives, and then ultimately do right by them. In the old series, the Doctor would often just wander off. He never came back for Harry Sullivan or Sarah Jane. He left UNIT to defend Earth on their own as soon as his Tardis was operational. He straight up just left Peri in deep space, as the wife of a morally questionable smuggler. That's who the Doctor is. He's just innately a little bit selfish and disinterested, and he doesn't necessarily always choose to do the responsible thing, over indulging his own whims.
>>219861611>somewhere there's a universe where series 6 and 7 were as great as series 5Fuck....
>>219858846what isn't slop in bread and circus?
>>2198638736 is better than 5.
>>219863701It’s hair flanderization
>>219863979Most of series 6 is worse than series 5. I even enjoy the somewhat more polarizing series 6 episodes like The Doctor's Wife and Rebel Flesh / The Almost People and I'm saying that.
Last night I decided to watch the 50th anniversary when I haven't seen anything Doctor Who in a long whileThe whole reveal that they'd be saving Gallifrey isn't really as cool now that I know it just ingloriously gets destroyed again later. Also I watched the 1996 film for the first time. The fact that the 7th doctor just randomly gets gunned down was just so funny
>>219864970
>>219861589Actually, anon, I got news for you.
>>219864970I've been coming around on the TV movie. It's still pretty bad, but I respect the effort to do something kind of moody and dark with Doctor Who. In retrospect, I'd rather we had gone down that path, rather than having it become an increasingly camp farce.
>>219863528>muh old peopleGo be a faggot elsewhere.
>>219865969I am super straight grandpafag.
>>219865413The movie was really back and forth for meThe beginning was kinda coolThen there's a long stretch where Grace won't believe the Doctor and tries to get him institutionalized that just drags. ffs she saw he had two hearts and came back to life, i'm not really sure why she's acting like he's just delusional. Then them running around town to get the clock piece was pretty coolThen the Master showdown in the Tardis just goes on and onIt was kinda cool to have a different take on Doctor Who with romance and guns. Not saying it's what they should've gone with at all, but it was a novel concept to see American Doctor Who. Also I really liked the 8th doctor, such a shame he really only appears in the movie.
>>219858874Eccleston is the most underrated Doctor. Pains me to see Americans telling other Americans to skip Series 1 and go straight to Tennant. Capaldi was good too, though. Only way I can still enjoy rewatching this series is to pretend it ended with S10.
>>219864206>Rebel Flesh / The Almost People I liked this one. Never quite understood the hate for it (aside from the CGI being a bit shit). >The Doctor’s Wife A decent episode, but don’t agree with the 9 or 10/10 reviews it regularly gets. I suspect a lot of it is from Gaiman fans.
>>219858840I didn't watch his episodes because he seems like a boring grandpa
>>219865372The showrunner has now explicitly said it’s a gay show for gays. Basically, he’s salting the earth on his way out knowing that the main audience for this show is young boys who won’t touch anything with that label.
>>219866287You watch faggot propaganda made by a faggot for other faggots. You are, in fact, a faggot.
>>219866892At the very least, Eccleston had the best Dalek episodes, and he plays dark and troubled better than Tennent, who comes off like a child throwing a tantrum.
>>219858905A woman Doctor Who was never going to work, because the young boys who make up a substantial proportion of the show’s audience don’t want to be seen watching a show for girls. It’s the same reason Zesty Who didn’t work. On top of all that, Whittaker just wasn’t convincing in the role. You need to cast someone with screen presence, the ‘it factor’ or whatever you want to call it. Someone who is not only charismatic, but also believable as the smartest person in any room. I blame the showrunners, though. The casting decisions as well as the writing are on them.
>>219865316Is it really that easy to kill a Timelord?
>>219866977I know. I don't even like Dr. Who, but I'm sad another pillar of sci-fi's been destroyed.
>>219866833He appears a couple more times later in the show.
>>219867232I think it could have worked. But the casting would’ve had to be ridiculously good.
>>219867010Doctor Who was always a gay show.
>>219867261If they are on their last life then yes.
>>219867261No, its not. He would've been fine eventually if this stupid bitch hadn't started sticking bits of metal in his hearts.
Does Doctor Who have the most raped fandom in existence?Even on platforms where shitting on nu-Trek and nu-Wars is the norm, whovians who eat the modern slop seem to vastly outnumber the puristsOr have they simply given up altogether?
>>219867437Aren't most Dr. Who fan bongistanis? They've a long, proud tradition of being raped, don't you know.
>>219866933>A decent episode, but don’t agree with the 9 or 10/10 reviews it regularly gets. I suspect a lot of it is from Gaiman fans.I like it for a lot of reasons, but the main ones are that its stakes are relatively low other than the Doctor and companions not dying, the antagonist being creepy as shit, and Neil Gaiman being the first writer in the entire revived show that remembers the TARDIS is more than just 1 room. The dialogue is pretty good too.Ironically the thing I dislike the most about the episode is the TARDIS in Human form. She's too quirky.
>>219867476Yeah though Moffat made it big in America.
>>219861549That episode is not a highpoint, it absolutely gets better, yes. It also gets worse. DW has some very high highs and very low lows. Eccleston is a great Doctor but he only has like two episodes I'd consider really good, a couple decent ones, and then there's some stupid shit like Victorian ghosts and farting green niggas. Show picks up with Tennant, gets absolutely gigakino towards the end of his run (his initial run, not his subsequent retarded cameos). Smith is also really good, but towards the end of his run is where you see a massive fall off in quality. Anons here cum their pants over Capaldi but honestly most of his episodes are complete dogshit, not because of him, but because the writing had simply crapped out at that point. Beyond Capaldi is so worthless it's not even worth talking about.
>>219867437Whovians are giga autists and Doctor Who is their special interest. They will scarf down every turd that the show gives them. But you have to understand it is a relatively small fandom, way smaller than trekkies. Doctor Who has always been, especially from the reboot on, a show that was massively popular with normies. Everybody in the UK would tune into DW during it's peak. Once it became shit, the viewership basically ceased to exist because the hardcore fanbase is so tiny.Trek has a much bigger fandom, but much less autistic overall and much less willing to put up with complete garbage, so the number of people in the fanbase that give up on nutrek garbage ends up dwarfing the minority of gay redditors that continue to pretend that it is good.
>>219867751Capaldi had the best writing on the entire show.
>>219867887You're fucking delusional. Ok ok he had Heaven Sent. That's literally fucking it, and even then I think it's overrated. But one episode doesn't outweigh most of the run being dogshit. THE MOON IS AN EGG. YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR OXYGEN BECAUSE CAPITALISM. Come on bruh.
>>219861549when i started watching the show many years ago when matt smith episodes were airing on tv still, i skiped all of Eccleston and just started with david tennet. never understood him as being cast as a doctor. never liked still dont. tennet and matt smith are much better.
>>219867932He had better writing than the Tennant era.
I prefer Doctor Who to Star Trek, because I am Solipsist.
>>219867261If I remember correctly Missy tells someone exactly how to gun down a Timelord, something about the head and both hearts.
>>219867437I don't know much about the Star Trek fandom but it could be a lot worse than people passionately criticizing it. Star Wars is just so fucking bleak. Everyone's been beaten down so much that people don't even complain anymore, everyone's just left.Hell it's been 7 years since Star Wars was in theaters and they're finally churning out some mediocre slop next months and no one cares. It's just apathy all around and it can't get any worse than that and I'll say that the 14th doctor just being Tennant again, the new special doctor just being Rose, I'm starting to just not care anymore. The current state of things is just embarrassing
>>219867955Tennant had Waters of Mars, Satan Pit, Midnight, Silence in the Library, Family of Blood, Blink, Girl in the Fireplace, Turn Left, The End of Time. His run was fucking bursting with kino. And the characters were actually good, so you cared about the arcs even if they were cheesy. Capaldi had nowhere near as many good episodes. It's not shitting on him as an actor, but he wasn't given as much material to work with
>>219868132>Satan Pit, Blink, Girl in the Fireplace, Turn LeftOverrated, Extremis is better than them.
>>219868237>le simulation>defeat the aliens with the power of loveExtremis was empty hype and absolutely not better than those episodes I listed.
>>219868292World Enough and Time is better than all of those too.
>>219867437The Doctor Who fanbase, especially the classic Doctor Who fanbase who are also the biggest defenders of the current show had already gone through a decline. Moreover there's a fear in the mind of some classic fans of the show ending again, that the show MUST continue because of trauma from when the show ended before.
>>219868021The John Wick method then?
>>219867947Well you should because he's the only nu-Who Doctor who's actually based

>>219868660
>>219868644He is straighter than 10.
>>219858840FPBPMost of his episodes are dogshit (almost all of series 8 except Listen and Flatline, Dalek two parter, Hell Bent, all his Christmas specials the Monk trilogy, Twice Upon a Time)
>>219861874My problem with Capaldi is they didn’t know what to do with him, the arc of the first series is if he’s a good guy and it culminates in Missy going:>”Doctor, it’s time to prove if you’re a good guy. I offer you an army of Cybermen, do you accept?”>”No.”Great storytelling. Then they just abandon that and he’s playing guitar and being a good grandpa because the asshole Doctor gimmick flopped and it was cringe.
>>219869864Him playing the guitar is kino.
>>219871224If kino changed its definition to gay then sure
>>219861941Classic Series>Meant to be disposable trash>Is mostly kinoNew Series>Meant to be kino>Is mostly disposable trashmany such cases
I like Matt Smith's era the most out of nu-Who
>>219867437the worst part about Doctor Who is that it was actually the FIRST fandom to get raped, but because it happened all the way back in 2005 they just never realised it.imagine if 95% of Star Wars fans were still defending the prequels even if the prequels had already been made by Disney and already had everything people hated in the Sequels. that's Doctor Who.

The Fitzroy pub club, did more damage to this show than anyone else would like to admit. Also Lawrence Miles might be a genuine schitzo but he absolutely got everything right about the level below the bottom of the barrel this franchise would descend to.
>>219871564Anon, 3 was the worst one
>>219872406That's 2, Martha > Rose
Smith's run is almost perfect. You could just take Series 5 and leave it by itself. Just a perfect encapsulation of the Doctor and a whimsical storytale experience. I cannot stand Tennant

I have to wonder what the hell the BBC higher ups think of RTD at this point. Do they really just trust him to bring back the traditional audience (which was mostly kids and teen boys)?Cause it's clearly not working, and we can all see why it's not working.Do you think all of his little outbursts lately are because they've been pleading with him behind the scenes?I can see it in my head.>"but what if we just made it a bit less gay?">RTD turns beet red, and throws a chair across the room, and then insists he knows EXACTLY what the audience needs

>>219880150Disney + insider here.It wasn't availible on our service in the UK, as it was exclusive to the BBC there. In truth though the show performed very well, especially with families and people under 35. It out performed all Star Wars content by a small margin in the USA, but decisively in almost every other country. This led to questions being asked on what we could do to aquire more of the rights to the show from the BBC when the next round of negotiations came around. The plan was for feature films exclusive to cinemas as part of the deal, and a full integration into the StarWars universe. Disney would attempt to acquire the rights to various fractured parts of the "Whoniverse" such as Terry Nation's Dalek monsters, for use in both StarWars and the MCU. One plan was for the Fugitive Doctor tostar in the Mandelorian Movie, before spinning off into a trilogy of feature films written by acclaimed British screenwriter, and of course former Doctor Who show-runner Chris Chibnel. This project actually got quite far along planning-wise in an attempt to impress the BBC into signing the deal to make Disney co-owners of Doctor Who (Awkwafina had been approached as to the possibility of using one of her multiple contracted films to play The Master, for example).Negotiations turned very sour however when it became clear the BBC did not want to sell any of its stake in Doctor Who, at all, under any circumstances. Without ownership, or co-ownership, we had been ordered to play hardball to try to call the BBC's bluff, but this was a redline for them and the BBC walked. That's honestly what happened. If the ratings had been low then that would have worked in our advantage and we could have secured one ofthe most click generating IPs on the internet for a vastly reduced cost.

>>219880341That's only half of why I don't like her, or her era.I find her bland, flat, and lacking in basically anything I like about the character of the Doctor. It's clearly Doctor Who aimed at people who complained about Capaldi's Doctor being too dark and mean, which is to say every rough edge is sanded down, and it just lame.Same for Gatwa, actually. If your entire character is group hugs and emotional support, you're a shitty character. Watching modern Doctor Who feels like I'm in some kind of group therapy session for incredibly fragile people.

>>219886706The OG OG fans in their 50's and 60's are either not watching or incredibly grumpy at this point, and the people who were more casual fans around the time of the initial reboot are also done. The problem with DW is there's a whole parallel fanbase that basically spawned on Tumblr, that actually wants the show to be even more woke. You see them every now and again, usually arguing that we *need* a female showrunner now, because that's all they care about. Moving the needle, instead of getting a watchable TV show. They're a very loud and persistent minority.
>>219858846this. Total garbage through and through.Something is wrong with you if you like this show.

>>219886993It's the fear of the show ending that's motivating them. You see it even with RTD, and Moffat in some interviews where it feels like the real reason they bothered coming back was to prevent the show from being shelved. It's the people who even now buy Big Finish. You have the tumblr/reddit fanbase as well but even there they mainly just care about Doctors 9-12 while giving token defences to 13 and 15. There are people who constantly want to move the needle, but they're being enabled by the older classic fans.

>>219886654Based RTD putting gamers in their place. Classic episode for sure. Just a pity it wasn't canon.>Using every ninth word, Alan communicates to them that he is in pain. Belinda touches her version of the certificate to Alan's, which causes them to experience all of time simultaneously. The Doctor rescues Belinda while Alan reverts to a sperm and egg, which is cleaned up by a robot.I think Ncuti's rapturous reaction to the rather casual murder of Alan really brings into sharp focus the full horror of this abomination of an incarnation. This is no longer a man of compassion and kindness filled with awe at the wonders of the universe. This is a man boiling with hatred and consumed by cruelty. A man who cackles with glee and does high kicks when his companion's friend is HILARIOUSLY murdered by insane robots a thousand light years from home. Ncuti's Doctor sees human life as disposable indeed. Particularly the lives of white male gamers, who just so happen to make up the vast majority of Doctor Who's fanbase. It is in moments like these (and there are many in this series) that the showrunner drops the mask entirely and Ncuti's Doctor becomes merely a barefaced avatar for RTD to spew forth a disturbingly comprehensive torrent of bile and fury at a fanbase he so clearly despises. One can practically feel the poisonous contempt the author has for his audience burning right off the screen. Genuinely frightening stuff and certainly not for children.

>>219888504Rogue is the best.
>>219888015The most chilling part is knowing this man has complete creative control of a show watched by millions of young people worldwide. It's like one of those dystopian 90s sci-fi flicks where the amoral villain tries to get kids hooked on some super addictive new designer drug he's created, only in RTD's case the drug is his appallingly-warped personal ideology and he's successfully pumping it into the minds of impressionable youngsters around the globe. Well I say successfully - I admit to taking a considerable measure of comfort in knowing that practically no one outside of us hardcore faithful few actually watches this tripe anymore. What would otherwise be a terribly depressing state of affairs is in this case a cause for celebration knowing that RTD is basically an IRL Bond villain and his evil plot for world domination has been foiled, largely by his own doing due to how utterly shithouse the era of his second coming turned out to be. So consumed by agenda was he that he plum forgot to make even a single episode remotely entertaining. Whoops. I sincerely hope after this upcoming catastrophe of a Christmas special RTD has cooked up for us he immediately leaves the show forever and never, ever goes near it ever again. Ever.

>>219886151Jodeh era is completely devoid of anything unique, interesting, or memorable. Sets, music, direction, and style are equally as bland as the Doctor and her three companions. Why did Chibnall do it?
>>219890156Chibnall just seems like an endlessly dull individual. He had some vague idea he wanted to recreate the 5th Doctors era, because that was his childhood era, and that was it. Absolutely no creative input past that point.>wouldn't it be grand if the Doctor was a lovely person with some lovely mates :^)Yes, thank you, Chris. >>219888504One of the only episodes this series where RTD's villain of choice WASN'T a straight white male and by an astonishing coincidence the only episode where the Doctor shows the villain mercy. The straight white male villains in Planet of the Incels and that execrable Eurovision episode are brutally tortured and/or murdered but honestly, they got off light. >Lucky DayStraight white male villain Conrad Clark is a straight white male podcaster who dares to question authority. Having learned that UNIT operate with zero governmental oversight, Conrad publicly questions why this clandestine military agency are allowed to do whatever they damn well please entirely on the taxpayer's dollar while offering zero public transparency.Obviously these concerns are entirely valid and provide the framework for a potentially intriguing examination of the unchecked power the Doctor & UNIT wield on behalf of Earth. Instead it's a poorly-built soapbox featuring a clearly-unhinged RTD (played terribly by Ncuti Gatwa) railing against the horrors of allowing straight white males to question the establishment. This repellent rant stands out as particularly loathsome.>You have to be invited into my TARDIS, Conrad. To be special. But you? You're special... for all the WRONG reasons. You see, I am fighting a battle on behalf of everyday people... who just want to get through their day, and feel safe, and warm, and fed. And then along comes this... NOISE. All day long, this relentless NOISE. COWARDS like you, weaponising LIES, taking people's insecurity and fear and making it currency. You are exhausting. You STAMP on the truth, CHOKE our bandwidth and SHRED our patience. Because the only strategy you have is to wear us down. But the thing is, Conrad, I have energy to BURN and all the time in the universe.RTD's transformation into Blofeld is complete as he savagely castigates the fans for daring to question his evil empire Spectre (formerly known as Doctor Who).

What's interesting is if you kind of squint, there are the beginnings of good ideas in RTD's work.Science fiction should be talking about un-elected governmental bodies and the power they weirld. It should be talking about the way disabled people are treated in society. It should be talking about the way people are increasingly disappearing into their own personalised dream worlds. The problem with RTD is he's the villain, and he doesn't get it.He supports the un-elected governmental bodies. He treats the disabled as tokens to gloat about his own virtuousness, while also attacking "incels" who often are disabled or mentally ill, and at the very least are disadvantaged. He is himself completely entrenched in his own make-believe world of social media bullshit. If anyone good ever takes control of the show, they should do these ideas again, and do them right. genuinely.
