I convinced my buddy and his wife to watch this once. We got about 30 seconds into it and his wife threw a fit that bunny kid was pedophilic and we went back to watching Disney and Nickelodeon crap made by actual pedophiles.

Shitty style, zero substance. Not sure why artists and filmmakers fawn over shitting the bed as hard as earthly possible. Garbage movie, for garbage people that get high on their own farts.

NTA but explain what there is to get. This movie seems to really resonate with some people. Was it because this was your childhood?

I think Korine was like 20 when he directed this. Even at such a young age, Korine was fully aware of the influence of the circus and vaudeville on the early years of cinema. It’s an influence he sought to recontextualize entirely, transplanting it into the “white trash” poverty of his own time. The film’s fragmented structure mirrors the devastation of a town struck by a natural disaster, but it also captures a multiplicity of subjectivities, as though these perspectives themselves had been shattered and shambled by the tornado. What emerges is a singular, almost proto-Malickian poetry (I’m thinking here of Malick’s experiments beginning with To the Wonder), yet devoid of even a trace of sentimentality. Korine exploits the people he films, but in doing so, he reveals their beauty, a beauty no one would have suspected.

For me, I came from a generally "nice" home, but I had trailer park friends until I was like 8. It was kind of terrifying and surreal to go to their houses and see how they lived; like stepping into an alien world where every single social rule is different. It was also thrilling. For me, Gummo is the only thing I have ever looked at that captures those lost childhood feels.
