Turn your key sir!

Leave it to your fellow zogbot to shoot you for refusing to participate in endimg the world
>>219937225>>219937666Well Satan, this was a highly embellished scene in the movie. IRL, the pistols are for self defense in the event someone was trying to gain access to the control center. It takes two people to generate a launch command, so killing the only other person in there with you is not only pointless but would be considered murder by the Air Force. In the director's commentary they said something like they added it for a bit of drama even though it was nonsensical.
>>219937270Watch 'Cube Zero' (2004) to find out.
>>219937225Robert Culp did this shit first:https://youtu.be/EhAmIGh2Pb4?t=1288PROTIP for Zoomies:Basically 'Now is Tomorrow' (1958) + 'Colossus: The Forbin Project' (1970) + 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' (1986) = 'War Games' (1983).Also:If you haven't seen the 'Forbin Project' and Colossus being an epic 1970's AI, you're missing out big time.
>>219937225It's Hollywood level stupid. The system is designed to be impossible to activate without 2 people cooperating. Shooting someone in the head is nonsensical. He doesn't WANT to launch the nukes. Shooting him in the head only gives him what he wants: not launching the nukes.Plus the situation assumes that enemy nukes are incoming . So you both are gonna die anyway. Killing him sooner makes no difference.
He should’ve just cut his ear off
>>219937225Nah, go fuck y'self
>>219938115What most people don't know is that it takes 2 crews of 2 people to launch. A flight of missiles has several crews on duty at any given time in different control facilities, and 2 crews have to 'agree' before anything can be sent up as an extra safety measure. Additionally, the launch control bunkers are connected with one another and everyone can see the missiles' statuses. If one crew tried to go rogue, it would immediately set off an alarm in the other control bunkers. If no launch command was issued to them, those other crews could then go through procedures to inhibit the launch. The one thing the Air Force absolutely could not let happen was an accidental (or intentional) missile launch and they added some pretty serious steps to prevent it from happening.

>>219939337Seems unlikely a pilot would end up being a missileer later. You need to be pretty young to start a career on either path, and the Air Force is more selective in training missileers than pilots.
>>219937270Then you become the key.
>>219939337he was also FBI director
>>219937857Is it over?
Would it have been historically accurate for an USAF silo operator to've had a revolver instead of an automatic at this time? I know pilots used them as survival guns, but that's for fitting into a plane, not on-base work.
>>219939337At what point did he start drinking?
>>219941626Probably accurate. They were in an underground bunker dozens of miles or more from the main base. Really only meant as a last line of defense if someone got in before the Air Force's quick response team in helos could show up. It was still common for cops to be carrying revolvers at the time too.
>>219940132No comrade premier, we're so back.
>>219938115>>219937732The central message of the movie is that nuclear war is pointless. Weird how you missed that given how explicit the movie is about it.
>>219943430That's not really relevant to the logic of the scene
Sir you must turn your key, we are at DEFCON 3. Turn your key, sir.
Sorry, no can do. This guy said no key turning allowed.
>>219937857>>219937225I'll be honest, I can never remember which one is from Red Alert 2 and which is from War Games.

why dont we get FMVs in games anymore
I wonder what it feels like to kill 50 million people. Although I suppose you'd be dead yourself in 10 minutes.
>>219946601If the only result of your action leads to death of others and yourself, without saving a greater number of people then it's not worth killing others. If Russia launched nukes that are going to wipe out a large chunk of the U.S. regardless of what you do, it is morally better to not murder a bunch of Russians purely for retaliation.

mass effect 1 would make a good movie
>>219937732I can't even think about the concept of society ending thermonuclear war seriously anymore ever since I saw someone depict it as a soijak.
