Why is it like this? Can't they just find and pay good writers? I promise movies can still be successful and beloved if they don't have crazy special effects or ryan reynolds, just tell a good story.

I feel exactly the same way. I believe it’s the rampant cronyism. I will continue to cite Prometheus as one of the best examples of this. The original script was really good, but then someone clearly wanted Damon Lindelof to get paid, so he was brought in to “punch up” the script into the utter idiocy we got.

Most of the time these """"writers"""" want to tell their own stories, so they latch on to existing IPs and co-opt them for their own purposes.

The real problem is that filming tech has advanced to such a level that what once would have been instantly eyeballed as “b” and even “c” movies (with “b” and “c” level shitty scripts) can now pass themselves off as higher-grade productions. That’s why I actually keep a list of writers/directors to watch and others to steer clear of. Using Prometheus again as an example, I only gave it a chance because Spaihts and Ridley were involved. I know that Ridley will always produce a film that’s nice to look at, but the final product will still rely on the writer. If I’d only seen Lindelof’s name alongside his, I’d have never bothered to watch it for any other reason than to relentlessly mock it.

Writing is actually the cornerstone of art and true creation.
It's one men building a world, and it's characters.
Everything else is dressing that stems from writing, acting, directing, they are all branched out of the writer's vision
Maybe, MAYBE music and foley is also creation, as that's independant from the writing.
But you are mistaken that "this is the easy part"

Sometimes I wonder if it’s a purposeful attempt to demoralize the masses. It’s insane how far quality standards have fallen. And as bad as it is in film, music is even worse. The films they churn out certainly aren’t good, but at least they pass the time. The music that gets pushed the hardest is outright unpleasant to listen to.

Everyone is desperate to justify their own existence, and very few have the talent to do so.
Executives can’t just let a good, established story be told. They have to put their own spin on it, make it theirs.
Hack writers who can’t get their own work published staple their ideas onto an existing IP, making it completely different from the source material.
Nepotism has gotten insanely out of hand, and we’re facing a competency crisis like never before in the entertainment industry. And everything failing scares Hollywood so much that they won’t risk original stories anymore, even if there are good ones out there.
