It was a spiritual thing and it made it easier to wear a samurai helmet. It's like a European monk's halo-haircut + the topknot acts as further cushioning. Samurai helmets were partially suspended using a liner, but it was still thin iron that would heat up.

I've watched maybe almost a thousand japanese movies. these are ones I thought were better than others. if I had to recommend anyone to watch just one it'd be orochi because it does not get enough attention for how great it is, one of the best sword and sorcery flicks I've ever seen.

The most depressing part about all of these films is that the Japan in thesemovies no longer exists. The country side is dead, grandma no longer has sweet shops for kids in the local neighborhoods because there are no kids and grandma is dead, local neighborhoods have been taken over by Indonesian Muslims or viets/indians, the Internet has made everyone even more introverted than before. The economy is fucked and everyone is miserable. It’s nice to escape back to the peak of Japan.
