Never watched this show but just listened to a retrospective of it yesterday. Pilot and everything was ready to go, but the show was just missing something.

So they wrote in a new character written specifically for David Spade who refused at first. Didn't want to be typecast as a snarky assistant.

The showrunner talked him into it by saying that's where Spade's comedy comes from. He can't be a Boss making insults to his employees, that's just cruel. But an assistant punches up, like an underdog. And that's who David Spade is.
Plus I'm sure the money was good.
