Why was this character so beloved other than Johnny Depp? He's annoying and extremely camp.

Jack has a little edge in the Black Pearl which he instantly loses in the sequels. A lot of people like the second one best but I think the first one is the only really good one. Mainly because of how hard Sparrow gets Flanderized in the sequels.
