Was he right?
>The generation I think of myself as part of was raised on television — which means that, at least I was raised to view television as more or less my main kind of artistic snorkel to the universe. And I think television, which is a commercial art that’s a lot of fun, that requires very little of the recipient of the art … affects what people are looking for in various kinds of art.
>Commercial entertainment — its efficiency, its sheer ability to deliver pleasure in large doses — changes people’s relationship to art and entertainment, it changes what an audience is looking for.
>It would be one thing if everybody was absolutely delighted watching TV 24/7. But we have, as a culture, not only an enormous daily watching rate but we also have a tremendous cultural contempt for TV… Now TV that makes fun of TV is itself popular TV. There’s a way in which we who are watching a whole lot are also aware that we’re missing something — that there’s something else, there’s something more.

Christ what a pretentious faggot. Glad he roped himself. If he was alive today he would be friends with Ben Shapiro and have a grifter podcast.

Yeah
TV (and later the internet) acts as a skinner box for a vast proportion of people who realize that they don't enjoy the vast majority of what they watch, but watch anyway because the high of occasionally stumbling into something good produces too much dopamine to ignore. It chains a great number of people to it because they effort involved in doing anything else outweighs the chance of a free dopamine hit just by watching something on TV, even if they realize fully that they're actively bored or unhappy while watching it
This is why TV blows and movies will always be the superior art form, they aren't designed for you to watch forever

Television is not a thing anymore, nobody fucking watches TV. All propaganda is on the internet, and it's like ten times more effective on the net, particularly because you can make retards believe that they're actually being le epic free thinkiers doing their own research but in reality this "independent research" is mostly consumption of the same propaganda to either make them permanently butthurt or affirm their already existing beliefs. Just look at this fucking shithole where people in one breath talk about how science and scientific research and graphs can be untrustworthy, limited or straight up rigged but then right after will use meme images of various statistics to back up their arguments, whatever "side" they're on.
And when we talk about social media, the "algorithm" is tailored in a specific way so that people constantly see inflammatory shit and divisive shit. Also, most popular social media sites / apps right now are Elon's Xitter and TikTok neither of which encourages proper discussion conceptually, instead putting everything into short burst form. People are more interested in le epic gotchas and accusing each other of associaton with most henious shit they can imagine. Sometimes it feels zoomers will start killing each other on the streets with footage of that being monetized by you know (((who))).

The lesson being . . . don't draw vast cultural conclusions from momentary tech trends, which will change before you've finished conceptualizing them. His own work, being popular, was capable of affecting society in exactly the same way. Yet he saw himself separate from the world.

It's because anything controversial will harness the most attention so every media will emphasize controversy to the point there is nothing just normal anymore. It must jump from shocking news to shocking news.

Where the fuck did I do that? Reading comprehension skills on you are poor. My post in fact suggest the opposite, I'm shitting on people using retarded meme surveys, graphs, studies (none of which they even read beyond the title / short description) to back up their positions. So often these are either dated or have a very narrow research pool (most of research is that way, very narrow, all of these fucks are just filling their resumes). And that is when there are actual links. Often it's just "here's a pic with statements and numbers, it's true because i say so you hecking chud / tranny".

>>219977892
DFW is genuinely good and I really enjoy reading him, but at the same time being specifically obsessed with his work over other literature is something people (foids) are right to see as a red flag given his approach to writing and subject matter. Shitting on people for reading him at all is insane though.

>Oppenheimer, when in the mood, could talk to just about anybody about anything, but Faulkner found conversation difficult with strangers; a bare yes or no was often all he could manage. Oppenheimer said he had recently seen a television play based on a Faulkner story and asked what Faulkner thought of television as a medium for the artist.
>“Television is for niggers,” said Faulkner.

Every statement ever made about television being for dumbed down subhumans is true and accurate
Nevertheless, people are now too stupid to watch TV
It's actually shocking, the main young cohort is literally "Yeah I don't have the attention span or the mental acuity to engage with CSI: Miami, I'd rather watch this Chinese kid spin frisbees"

that makes no sense. children's books require very little as well, does that mean the entire medium is juvenile?
