Also Nausicaa was cool for seeing that giant flesh machine open its mouth and then shoot a laser which causes a line of like 40 nukes to go off in the horizon. Probably the coolest movie explosion ever and seeing it on the big screen was epic. Spirited Away is alright, Howl's Castle is exactly what you're describing, Ponyo looks nice but is also kind of what you're describing and kind of boring. idk I think those are all of the ones I've seen
Modern Ghibli films have just not been very good at all. Sure it looks nice, but the plots and pacing are just piles of shit.

The boy is an emotionless piece of wood just like most other characters in Miyazaki films. There's no reason to care about what he's going through
