Godzilla 1998 isn't really all that bad.. it's just not a Godzilla movie. If this was called "Dino City" or "Jurassic Manhattan" I think people would have enjoyed it more.

Although it is funny watching Zilla get stomped out in Final Wars because the japs were seething about this movie kek.

this is the only godzilla content i have consumed and frankly i dont want more

At least watch Minus One or Shin Godzilla...or any of the older movies.

Agreed, it's a lousy Godzilla movie. It's not even a particularly good movie in its own right

But it is a failry entertaining King Kong reskin for lovers of intensely commercial big budget tentpole slop, and more damning evidence that the milquetoast movies of yesteryear continue to ultramog the 'best' contemporary movies without mercy or apology

I would however add that the opening credits are pure scorching unchained cinema

I don't know why Godzilla fans are the way they are when all the old Japanese Godzilla movies are all schlock.
You'd think it was high art with how they act, but it's just a rubber dinosaur sliding on its tail to kick a rubber bug. There have been like three Baby Godzillas.

I just don't like that every character is the comic relief. It gets exhausting after five minutes

I saw this while on acid and it's literally the best thing.that's ever been created by mankind. The soundtrack is pretty good too.

Yeah I watched it recently and had the exact same thought. I couldn't tell if it was just nostalgia goggles though... or if even a "shitty" late 90s flick is still better than the slop of today.

>>219998690
I think for some fans it's because they just made Godzilla a fuckin regular t-Rex in this movie lol but I agree like why take it so seriously? At the end of the day most of the franchise is about giant monsters that wreck cities and fight each other.

The '90s vibes are strong and do a lot of the heavy lifting for sure, but when viewed within the sphere of 2026 filmmaking, it's refreshingly simple and honest in its intent to entertain, without feeling embarrassed by itself
>>
>>219998925
>fuckin regular t-Rex

How is this a T-rex. Zilla has enough distinguishing features to be his own movie monster
>eats fish
>likes to hide
>missiles can't lock on to him
>born pregnant w/ 200 babies
>>
>>219999067
Yeah Zilla is cool but they took the GODlike presence away from Godzilla and what's left is basically a big Dinosaur. Like I said I actually enjoy the film in a lot of ways and think Zilla is fun.. I'm just saying I can see how some diehard Godzilla fans may not like it

True

I like when the proper Godzilla BBQ'd that thing in Final Wars.
>>
>>219998925

It's a mutated iguana, not a dinosaur.
>>
Zilla got rekt in Final Wars
>>
>>219998378
I like it but only because I was 6 when it came out
>>
>>219998378
Ever since Final Wars, I view Godzilla 1998 completely differently. I see it as Zilla's solo origin movie before the character was folded into the Godzilla series, just like Rodan, Mothra, and Varan.

Honestly they could make a sequel today and title it Godzilla 1999. Just adapt the cartoon's plot about a "good" Zilla that can't breed, that helps humanity fight threats.
>>
>>219998378
the only bad thing about this movie is knowing that it was made by that faggot ronald emerich

the weakest part of godzilla 1998 is an overreliance on special effects
i watched it recently and its surprisingly paced well and the "human dilemma" is actually decently interesting
alot of godzilla movies
>focus on the monsters
and in the case of godzilla this is almost always not good, as godzilla works best as a vessel for a human issue
at which point
>the human drama tends to fucking suck or is remarkably dry
as mid as modern monsterverse is, at least it understands that
>king kong
has the best chance of being a character that is a sympathetic and relateable to humans
>>
don't recall anything about it
>godzilla randomly shows up in new york
>nothing even happens cause fuckall budget
thinking back only thing I can think of are hank azaria and jean reno (prob both drunk out of their minds att) making funny quips here and there
>>
>>220007599
>>nothing even happens cause fuckall budget
the movie was incredibly expensive
and EXCEPTIONALLY expensive when you compare it to [average toho godzilla movie budget]
although no doubt because the simpson's actors have an extremely high asking price
>>
>>220007733
why even dump so much into getting the simpsons VA cast to appear when they were still largely unknown as regular on-screen actors att?
no-one even wanted to see matthew fucking broderick by that point
>>
1998 is STILL the best looking/sounding Godzilla. fight me.
>>
>>220007930
I have no idea
I think matthew broderick did fine though
The real problem is what I want in a godzilla movie
>godzilla presents a problem
>people try to solve it
>a thematic way that addresses a human condition inherently, solves the problem and the world as a whole grows
for the most part 98 does follow this formula
the real question is as you said
>why the fuck does that justify nuking the budget on mostly the actors
i have zero clue
but jean reno was an extremely fun character to watch whenever he was on screen
>>
>>220007999
honestly? as long as godzilla or special effects arent on screen? yeah
>inb4 but muh monster
most of most godzilla movies have godzilla off screen most of the time
in fact the best ones have godzilla off screen most of the time
If the scenes illustrating the human problem solving are flat and uninteresting, thats most of the movie being flat and uninteresting
that said most of 1998 is in fact not flat or uninteresting

I've watched enough of Anno's garbage for one lifetime.
