It lacks the tongue-in-cheek meta quality of modern video game or comic adaptations so it comes across as a straight fantasy kung-fu actioner. You wouldn't even know there was necessarily a game, and for that reason it stands apart. They can't really do these anymore, they lost the technology.
I never played the game. I watched the movie and it was surprisingly good. Maybe 7/10 generously. Good enough to make us get the sequels.
