SH is pretty much Phantoms + Carrie + Twin Peaks, Jacobs Ladder is more for the sequel and even then, Lost Highway is clearly the most influential. People just love to regurgitate shit they learn from osmosis.
The way to make people understand the first game is just to tell them to read Phantoms but replace the Ancient Enemy with a tulpa created from a Carrie/Scarlet Witch-like Alessa. Unfortunately people just think it's Le Cult, demons 'n shit
