We're also basically just in complete speculation now with no historical grounding to make it alternate history, which makes it something else. If the show keeps focusing on the most boring character ever put to screen ie Rocknrolla guy and his family and the martian union strikes and what not, the show will just sink to nothing. If they want that type of conflict and for it to be interesting, they really need to just bite the bullet and time skip 100 years, have mars be an actual independent power with terraforming and then the tensions mean something. Have them actually find life out there, which in turn led to clues of even more itnelligent life which has led to a ton of funding for exploration, and the last scene of the show is them actually encountering intelligent life.

They use the rationale of "You're on another planet, you should be grateful for such a special experience" to get away with exploiting and underpaying them after they arrive.The show hasn't emphasized this much, but there would be resistance to the prospect of forcibly shipping everyone there back to Earth because of how human bodies have acclimated to Mars long term. A lot of those people would in effect have conditions like partial heart atrophy due to the lower gravity. So if they have to go back to Earth, that's a death sentence or at least an extremely difficult, painful re-adjustment
