i had like 3 channels worth watching growing up. family/disney channel, teletoon, and ytv, and saturday morning cartoons on other cable network channels. if nothing was on you had to do something else. i wouldn't compare that to the internet post youtube. by the time youtube was in its golden age i was already a teenager, to be fair i never bothered with myspace or facebook either but plenty of millennials did so that's on them. i wasn't raised by social media and youtube like zoomies were.

I think every generation has some cultural nexus point that defines them stereotypically but it doesn’t necessarily apply across the board. Late boomers and Gen X were raised with tv telling them they were special only to grow up and learn that wasn’t reflected in reality. Millennials grew under with self-esteem and inclusion based learning directives so they were conditioned to believe that if they weren’t included in something then they were being slighted somehow which produced a generation which had the most anxiety about in-group acceptance and adults that felt the need to broadcast their moral / political correctness. Something no one really talks about is that in the fallout of Columbine, reporters were quick to blame bullying as the cause of the tragedy (even though that wasn’t true) and politicians decided we needed anti-bullying PSAs so late millennials and early Gen Z grew up with a culture of bullying being the worst thing you could do and that lead to perceived victimhood having cultural cache and young people claiming marginalized identity (autistic, queer, minority) for status
